The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Horrible incident, vibes much appreciated :(

Hi all,

I've not been on RU for ages due to being so busy, but had an awful event tonight and could really use some vibes and reassurance.

My two outdoor buns Dany and Peach were playing out in the garden, and somehow Ivy the indoor bun has managed to get outside and got into a fight with Peach. After finally managing to separate them I noticed Peach was tilting his head to one side and his eye had gone all swollen :( I've had to rush him to the emergency vets and, long story short, she's punctured the eyeball badly and he has to have his eye removed asap

Peach wasn't doing so well by the time I got him to the vets, he was shaking and breathing super fast and he's not the healthiest bunny anyway, so I'm hoping he'll pull through tonight with no problems but I'm trying to be realistic at the same time :( His partner Dany has stayed with him at the vets and he's on strong painkillers so I hope that helps him feel better.

I'm a little upset with Ivy :( I know it's my fault and not hers because she shouldn't have been able to sneak past me, I should have double checked she was inside and properly secured. Basically the living room door wasn't quite closed, and she's managed to bite and bite at it until it came loose  I'm really trying to make a big fuss of her tonight and spoil her with treats because the poor thing can't understand why I was shouting at her to stop and dragging her away.

Just waiting for the call from the vets and am dreading it

I'm so sorry you've had such an awful disaster tonight. Goodness, these buns do worry us, don't they? Lots and lots of vibes for poor Peach. I hope the op goes ok.

It's so easily done - you take your eye off them for a second and something disastrous can happen.

Hopefully he'll make a good recovery, I've seen a couple of buns that have had to have their eye/eyes removed, and they do just fine.

... Lots of love and get well vibes for little Peach...........

What a shock that must have been for you... Hugs xxxxxx

Oh no, I'm so sorry, what a dreadful shock for you all. Sending mega vibes for Peach to recover as soon as possible xxxxx

Aw man, how awful for you :( Aboleth is a one-eyed bun and she copes really well: you wouldn't know if it wasn't obvious! She does always come for treats with her blind side though  She's been through one moult since her eye op and it all looks fine, so I think you just need to check on it until it's healed and through the first few moults, make sure nothing weird is happening :)

Hope everyone's scrapes and bruises heal quickly. Including your psychological ones! ::hugs::

Sending lots of vibes for Peach. I hope the operation goes well. xx

My Bentley had to have one of his eyes removed. Having just one eye didn't really seem to affect him and he continued to behave like any normal two-eyed rabbit. Rabbits do adapt very well.

Peach is doing better thanks and is now out of surgery :) Those famous RU vibes must have helped!

He saw the specialist rabbit surgeon who thinks he might be able to save the eye, even though the sight is gone. Basically the eye has been stitched shut to heal (and closed with a little button) and will be opened in a week to see if it's improved. If not then the eye may have to come out, but the vet wanted to give him the chance of having a less invasive surgery and quicker recovery. He and his partner Dany just came home this evening and are back in their own house being checked on every hour or so.

He was sat sulking in the corner of his run but I've now shut him in his shed as I'm worried about him getting too cold after having an anaesthetic? Also about the possibility of dirt getting in, the shed's a lot cleaner and not as dusty as the ground of the run. He's been eating and pooping since he woke up which is good, but still very subdued :( He's had a lot of vetergesic for the pain so I guess he's still drowsy.

Not out of the woods yet but much much more positive than I thought last night!

Yes, vetergesic can make bunnies *very* drowsy. I'm glad all seems to be OK (for the time being). A 'wait and see' with the eye. I hope he recovers well and that you get a bit of stress free relief :)

That's really good news: I think the vet must be very competent to give saving the eye (even as a dud) a go :) I hope Peach feels more himself soon. He might not like being stroked for a while: Aboleth didn't like anything near her head before her eye was removed (it was an untreated abscess), but she's fine now. I wouldn't worry about it: I do love the button idea! I imagine that keeps all sorts of yucky stuff out :)
