  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Help with good rabbit vet in Essex

Bunny1000

I think my rabbit savvy vet has left the practice and my rabbit has constant ear problems. Can anyone recommend a good rabbit savvy vet near or around Thurrock please?

Do you mean Tari in Shenfield? There's still an exotics vet there (Harvey) but he hasn't completed his post grad exotics certificate yet, afaik.

There's Lawton & Stoakes in Romford but I haven't used them personally.

Hol up, you're not suggesting William has left? Are you? [emoji24]

I'm afraid so, Graciee. :(

Just another thought for the OP, but there's Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon too. It's a referrals centre (with fees in line with that) but facilities there are amazing & they have a dedicated exotics ward with an exotics specialist. Worth considering if the ear problems have been going on for a while though.

When did he leave? Do we know where he's gone?

I hope he doesn't do admin for a year again [emoji24]

That’s right. The reviews are a bit mixed on Lawton & Stoakes. Will you continue to use Harvey? My bun isn’t insured unfortunately. If only I had known! William didn’t suggest another antibiotic. Baytril didn’t work at first, nor did sulfatrim. Depocillin injections are working but he needs to stay on it.

It was about a month ago but all I know is that it was quite sudden.

I've heard mixed reviews on them too, but also have to stress that it's just secondhand info. And people tend to shout a little louder if they've had a bad experience (in general, not just with vets) so sometimes there's a lot to weigh up.

We lost our last hamster last night :( so we're actually exotic-less now, but (in all honesty) I'm not sure what I would do in your shoes. Harvey has had a lot of direction & teaching from William up until now though so, personally, I'd see him at least once to see if he's happy to continue with the depocillin & gauge from there.

Sorry I can't be more help!

So sorry about your hamster. I think your right, I have asked for more medicine. I have been told to go ahead with the injections every day to see if it makes a difference. So will see what happens. I have registered with someone else just in case. Thanks for your help.

Thank you. Timothy was a very sweet little hammy and will be sorely missed.

I hope the injections help and that you're happy with whichever vet you decide to stick with. I did a quick search of local fb groups for you too but general consensus seemed to be William is the man to see!

Graciee, I did reply to you earlier but just noticed that it ended up in the quoted text box lol.... have just edited....

There are always so few exotics vets in Essex! :( Although I do find they are always in South Essex rather than where I live!
