  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Am not an expert, I just know that it is given in instances of GI. Someone may be along in a minute and give you a more detailed response :)

Oh dear has that fallen to me? Stasis basically means that a rabbit's stomach/gut have stopped working. It is life threatening, for several reasons.
There are many reasons why it stops working, from pain (commonly sharp "spurs on the teeth" causing mouth ulcers/to gut bloating up with gas) fright, imbalance in gut bacteria necessary to digest food, even urine infections. There isn't time for a lot of test results to come back before treatment is started, so we need an experienced rabbit specialist who can get the diagnosis right by a good examination.

There is the basic treatment for any case of "stasis".
There's pain relief, (metacam), avoiding dehydration - fluids by mouth or injection under the skin - keeping warm - gas relief (Woodwards gripe water/infacol/ tummy rubs etc) - getting food & fiber in. [fiber stimulates the gut naturally]

The vet needs to assess whether the top end isn't working - needs Maxolon.
The bottom end isn't working - needs Zantac. [There may be confusion cos zantac has been used in humans for stomach ulcers - but it is mainly used for the lower gut in rabbits]
None of it working - Maxolon + Zantac.
Blocked - eg "fur ball", caecal impaction - loads of fluids + pineapple juice, as long as the rabbit isn't blown up with gas etc.

All needs very good judgment by the vet.
I am grateful to Donnamt for getting a complicated issue into an understandable form.
CMG referred to a virus - there is good evidence for this, but it is early days yet. See Marie Kubiak post on Equine grass fever thread.
Hope this helps - I'm truly so sorry about your loss.
Judy & Thumper.
