Hello from new member

Warren Scout
Hello, I have just joined this forum. I am female, 45, live near Bolton in Lancashire with my many pets. I will soon be getting a small rescued rabbit, he is either a Netherland or Mini Lop (I do know the difference :D but I haven't seen him yet!).

A few years ago I used to run a small pet rescue and had many rabbits, but had to give that up due to ill health. I currently have a dog, 6 cats, 9 guinea pigs, 8 mice, 4 rats, 5 gerbils, a hamster, some tropical fish, and some time this week .... the bunny! :D

a very warm welcome to you and you big family..Keep us posted on your new arrival please and photos are always appreciated

Hi and welcome  Thats quite a brood you have there, I thought I was bad with 4 children, 1 dog, 5 rabbits, 1 guinea pig, two hamsters oh and a wonderful hubbby :D

Thanks for the welcomes! Unfortunately I don't have the kids and hubby :D , never had much luck with men .... I prefer animals these days.

As soon as I get my bun I will take photos and post them here. Problem with me is, as soon as I get a newcomer I find they 'need' money spending on them ..... I just took in 2 guineas that a friend rescued last week. They arrived with a perfectly good hutch, but I decided it was too small, and so now they have a 5ft long hutch!

Same will probably happen with the bunny .... he is coming with a hutch, but you never know, if I don't like the hutch .... well another £100 will probably be going from my bank account

Do you recommend that I get him vaccinated against VHD and Myxomatosis?

Chinakit

Its a big yes from me on that one. There is a lovely forum member on here that has just lost 6 bunnies to Vhd over the last few days    So please get your new bunnie vaccinated as soon as you can.

OK I will get him vaccinated against both .... do they need doing every year?

He won't be coming into contact with any strange rabbits though .... unless I show him in pet classes once he's put on some weight.

Hi and welcome!!

Myximatosis shoudl be done from 10 weeks of age and VHD two weeks after, VHD is normally a twice yearly jab, Myxi is annual for the boosters.

It's essential as both of these are awful, killer diseases.

Also, make sure he's neutered if he's not already

I don't think he will be neutered as my friend is a guinea pig person, she took him away from someone who wasn't looking after him. She isn't even sure 'he' is actually a he!!

Is it essential he's neutered, even if he won't be living with other rabbits?

chinakit

Absolutely essential, rabbits can be stroppy, territorial, and males will spray urine and scent mark like mad if not. It's much better for their health, prevents testicular cancer in males and ovarian and uterine cancer in females :)

Also, it's very inexpensive to neuter, my buck was £35 although I have heard some vets are cheaper, make sure you go to a small animal specialist vet as I've heard some nightmare stories about butcher vets

I am very lucky .... my vets are 5 minutes from my home and are fantastic with small pets. They have neutered many buns for me in the past, and have also performed caesarians on guinea pigs, and removed lumps from mice, all with great success!

I will give him a few weeks to settle in, then get him done.

Hi again! Sorry just wanted to clear up my typo - Myxi is twice yearly, VHD is once a year (depending on your vet and area) that is what mine recommends.

Oh, look at Bluebell and Benji, they are so beautiful. I love the way they sit with their back feet out. My little dog sits like that
