Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

gut stasis (again) U/D post 51 good news

Operate on what??? Bob had a satsuma sized fur/food ball at the top of his gut the first time it happened. They gave him pineapple juice and did lots of gentle massaging but it was really once the Cisapride had been given to him that he started to recover. Before the Cisapride he was sick for 3 full days with no poops. It took 24 hours for the cisapride to kick in (on both occasions) before poops started coming through. However small, it's the poops we're waiting for. This doesn't mean to say AT ALL that there's no hope without Cispapride. The web says it can take over a week sometimes for the gas to disapate and although no poops for over 24 hours is an emergency, as long as the bun is getting fluid and some form of food (Critical Care etc) then there's still options. Operating is absolutely the VERY last option - especially when I don't know what there is to operate on...they didn't mention an obstruction did they? Do you trust you vet? Where are you based? Can't MSN but can give you my email address if you want to talk directly.

When we went in on Sunday he said that if all else was failing they'd have to open her up to have a look but it was an absolute last resort. He did say there didn't appear to be any blockages but they'd take new Xrays tomorrow.

If there was a really good exotics vet near me I'd take her there in a heart beat. They won't do anything until tomorrow morning after 10 as I'll ring then and they'll update me.

I think they should keep doing what they're doing for at least another 24 hours. Their tummies can be fine one minute and then in stasis the next, but for their guts to recover, it can take a long time - certainly more than a couple of days. As long as the gas is reducing in the tummy then that's a good start - hopefully this will be the news you get tomorrow. Fingers crossed for you.

I really really hope she improves over night, I'm going to hate the waiting but I also have a very sick hamster to attend to tonight too.

A small blessing but thank goodness this is all happening when I'm between jobs and I've managed to save enough money for this sort of situation.

Please don't let them operate. Unless they are top rabbit vets, his chances of recovery are very poor.
I met another client at our vet (Exotic specialist) whose bun had been in stasis for 1 week before referral to GWR.
If you tell us your nearest town we can ask other members to recommend a bunny vet. (Praying you don't live on Snhetland Orkney or the Western Isles)
Thinking of all of you, Judy & Thumper.

This is supposed to be a good vet I'm at too. I'll ring them first thing tomorrow and if they insist that operating is the best way to go I'll ask that they refer Honey to the Vet School in Edinburgh that has a rabbit clinic and a specialist rabbit vet. :(

I live in Bonnybridge but am not far from Falkirk or Stirling. I just don't have a clue what to do for the best. I'm scared of leaving her too long because anything further that needs to be done for her will surely have more chance of success if she's as strong as possible but then I don't want them to do something that she has little chance of recovering from.

I handed a bag of food (Supa Rabbit Excel) to the vet today along with some of the green stuff she likes. She hasn't touched it so I don't think it can be that.

just read ypur post what do you feed your rabbit I know the vet you have your rabbit it dont use SS or royale when I first took my first rabbits there for there neautering they weren't happy to let them home as they weren't eatting I asked what they were trying to feed them as all they have ever knowing at this point was rabbit royal and I wasn't sure they would eat anything else and right enough I dropped tthere food into them and they eat it right away the vet was in stiches with it and said you have 2 spoilt bunnnys ther eI I got them home .........just a thought she might not be eatting as she dont like there food

I think she may not eat if her stomach is bloated with gas cos she feels bustin full!
Also these stasis buns really do need to be well hydrated.

I see you having 2 alternatives.
a) Ask your current vet to seek additional advice from the Royal D*ck Vet
or Francis Harcourt Brown in Harrowgate gives free advice to VETS ONLY.
b) Ask, & then insist if need be, for emergency referral to the Royal D*ck Vet.
Rosierabbit Ayreshire, is currently attending Edinburgh, the bun has a collapsed lung - mentioned it as a bit pricey with inpatient stay.
Pringle, Carnoustie had examination,& tests for recurrent stasis fairly recently.

I hope your little hamster is comfortable & stable tonight.

I hope you receive better news about Honey today

I have found that Buscopan can be very useful in cases of severe bloat. It is contraindicated in cases of stasis BUT if the bloat is not reduced first then my (unqualified) experience is that the Bun remains anorexic and not pooing.
Metoclop also appears to exacerbate pain in cases of bloat.

But I am only speaking as a Bunny Mum not a Vet

More vibes for poor Honey

Well I rung the vet this morning and the vet hasn't been to see Honey bunny yet but a nurse has.

She has done loads of poos during the night and is eating hay just now. At the moment she's still not eating her greens but if she's taking hay then that's good and it's nice to see that she is improving.:)

Hopefully get her home tomorrow but I've to ring again at lunch time to see if the vet has seen her yet.

Unfortunately my little hamster has gone downhill and I'm making him as comfortable as possible as I don't expect him to last the day.:(

Re. Honey - that's fantastic news!!!!! Poos and hay eating are clear signs of improvement. Bob was off pellets and anything else for quite some time but hay is the best thing for them anyway. Am so pleased for you both. Hopefully this is the start of a quick and full recovery.
Re. your little hamster, am so sorry. Being in the warmth and comfort of home is the best place.....
Bet you feel like you've gone through the mill in the last couple of days.

I know, I hardly slep last night and feel slightly sick today.

Re my hamster. He was so stressed out at the vet yesterday my fella and me decided it'd be cruel to take him back. We think it'd be better if he just slipped away in his own wee bed as he doesn't seem to be in a lot of distress at the moment.

So pleased she has made some improvement overnight - fab news! She just needs time to get her tummy back on track and ongoing pain relief, fluids and gut motility agents. If she is now passing droppings I would be inclined to give her fibreplex as well as syringe food until she self-eats.
You might be surprised that the sooner she comes home the sooner she might regain her appetite away from the stress of the vets. Hope she can come home soon. :)

I'm sorry about your hamster  When our little man had his tumour in his old age - much prodding and exam from the vet seemed to rupture his internal swelling (whatever it was....probably fluid) and he deterioriated sharply after his vet visit. However, he perked up again once this episode was over and passed quietly a weeks later in his own bed after a second deterioration - I often think this is the least stressful method for a hammy unless they are in obvious pain. Metacam really seemed to help both his arthritis and his pain management of his tumour especially at the end.

I'm so sorry about your hamster. I support your decision to keep him at home as the kindest option for such a serious condition.

I'm thrilled your little bun is eating hay & pooping. They often know what's best for them. The high fiber content of hay is a natural gut stimulant. So please don't worry that she's not back on a full diet yet. I'm looking forward to hearing she's home.
I think that "stasis/bloat" buns are all different in what things cause the "stasis". The basic principals of management are the same, but some buns respond better to some gut motility agents than others. It is a case of knowing your bun really.
I so hope that you'll be able to get some rest soon.
Judy & Thumper.

She's eating a wee bit of veg now too and seems much happier but they are going to keep her in tonight again as they don' want to risk having to put the feeding tube back in. She's still pooing too so at least her guts seem to be working again.

I've to ring tomorrow about 11 to see if I can have her home.

My wee hamster is still hanging on and taking his medicine. If he carries on this way I may need to rethink my decision about not taking him back to the vet.

What brilliant news that Honey is eating and poo'ing. I really hope you can have her home tomorrow.

Poor wee hamster :( i hope he can slip away peacefully xx

I'm glad to hear Honey is doing better now :) I hope she keeps improving and gets to come home soon.

Sorry about the little hammy, what a shame :( Hopefully he will go peacefully.
