Gordon is booked at the vets for an X ray UD 12/2 admitted

Thank you both :)

Yes hopefully I can have further tests done as soon as possible to establish exactly what in his heart is going wrong and then sort out a treatment. I feel I should have spotted something else being amiss earlier, his weight has stayed steady but he has been eating smaller amounts and resting more so I asked for his teeth to be checked whilst he was sedated but they look fine. In hindsight he does breathe more heavily by looking at his side which I have sometimes questioned to myself but put these things down to his resp infection, but hopefully now he can be managed.

We always think we should have seen something happening with our rabbits, and subconsciously I think we do notice a lot of things. The problem with rabbits is it's so difficult to put your finger on what exactly is happening, as they are such clever little blighters :)

I know Gordon will get the very best of treatment :thumb:

Thank you for the replies. The specialist hasn't rang today, the vet said to ring back if I haven't heard from her by tomorrow evening.

I took this picture of him last week, this has always been his typical resting position

Gordon is on his way to the specialist today. He's gone downhill, his hay intake has been next to nothing the past couple of days, he's still eating pellets and veg but not finishing them, he's not showing any signs of stasis or gut distress. He's just resting all the time, and not in his usual spots he's been under the wardrobe and behind my partners guitars not wanting to be out. He's been going for us which is very unlike him, even if I go to reach something near him very slowly he'll lunge. He's been trying to be away from beano as well even though she is taking good care of him and not bullying him, I did see him grooming her earlier but noticed he was eating her fur, like pulling it and chewing it which I thought was odd.

I am on my way to work until 9pm tonight but will be getting an update as soon as I finish.

Oh Liz, I'm so sorry to hear this

Sounds like your little man may be in a lot of pain.

Thinking of you and Gordon and look forward to a good update later. Lots of hugs xx

:( hoping he can be sorted but the poor little man sounds really poorly, thank you for taking such care with him xxx

Thank you for the replies xx

I've been on and off the phone today with the specialist, after looking at the x rays she confirmed Gordon has congestive heart failure. She said a cardiac ultrasound may be useful to further confirm this but said it would cost around £200, obviously I would pay for the treatment he needs but she said the radiographs are usually enough to diagnose this in the cases she's seen. He's having metacam to deal with pain which he had straight away at my usual vets so he didn't have to wait for that. He's also having injections of furosemide which is a diuretic and also is having enalapril orally. He's eating but by what she's said he's clearly not himself still so I am worried about him.

I just feel bad for him, he gets awfully stressed at the vets and is off for days after a simple vet trip. Its the same when he's on even oral meds at home he hates it. He shouldn't have to put up with all this

Poor Gordon :( I hope he soon feels better with his new medication. Sending more vibes for him and hugs for you. It is really so stressful when they are unwell.

Liz I was hoping for an update, so thank you :)

I'm so sorry about the news, which is what we suspected. If the X-rays have confirmed it, then there would be no need for ultrasound necessarily. An ultrasound could confirm the degree of failure, but the important thing is those very good drugs that he will be taking. They should improve his quality of life no end. I really hope so :D

Did the vet say how long she would expect those drugs to take to stabilise him?

Sending you loads of hugs xxx

Thank you both.

She said they should make him feel more comfortable but an improvement may not be seen for a couple of days I think, its been a bit of an awkward day since I am not allowed my phone at work so kept missing calls and had to ring back when I was allowed a couple of minutes. The specialist suggested I go to the practice tomorrow whilst she is there to discuss him with but I am at work while she is there so not sure when I can bring him home but should be tomorrow later on as I think he'll do better at home. He's still lunging at everyone which he's never done even at the vets poor man xx

Oh poor Gordon, he's had enough ...

I'm sorry you can't get to see the specialist. Hopefully you can get all the info you need over the phone and when you pick him up. It will be exciting to see his improvement after the meds kick in, and he begins to feel better.

He's been a bit of a worry for you, it has to be said xx

Just catching up with this, Liz. I'm so sorry Gordon's prognosis is dire, I really hope the meds will help him soon and he can come home and be comfortable with you again. (((((((((((Hugs and vibes))))))))))) Thinking of you and lifting prayers up for your dear boy. xxxxx

I just had to send you another bunch of hugs, Liz

You're working so hard to keep everything rolling, and it's not at all easy. With poor little Gordon, I guess he will be the star of the show over Valentine's weekend.

Love to you all xx

The diuretic is likely to help him feel alot better. In my experience improvement can be seen in 24 hours. The enalapril will help his heart function, reduce his blood pressure and offer some protection to his kidneys (which can be effected by heart problems). I have had numerous Rabbits with heart failure who have been on both Frusemide and Enalapril and they have all coped really well.

I hope that Gordon will soon be home and that he will feel much more comfortable within himself.
