  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Ginger again :(

I remember my vet being amazed at how long Sue continued for after he intimated she should be PTS as she only had half a working kidney. She had a good quality of life too - or I would have helped her to the Bridge.

I think a bunny's will to fight is an enormous strength - it got my five through myxi years ago.

Ginger has so much to live for. She loves her Biccy and you and Mrs Gray. She has a wonderful home, lots of space, tasty noms and bunny and human company all day. She is already in Bunny Heaven - why would she be ready to leave?

(I'm not saying that bunnies who don't fight don't have a good life - Sue did say 'enough' very clearly and she died naturally while the vet was drawing up the sedative prior to the euthenasia drug. I just think that some buns' determination to continue against the odds can surprise vets).

This is just SO similar to the pattern that Damson and Bramble (my kidney stone) rabbits had . . as a small particle of stone moved they would be in agony and not eat and looking quite honestly like PTS was only option -

after 12 hours fluids (rehydrated the kidney and shifted things back again) and pain relief (more than metacam usually) they would be like spring chickens again.

I know you had xrays done . . . but we did have a false negative with Damson early on - combination of the xray not being at the right angle so the relevant kidney did not show well, and a vet who did not realise that . .

also with Bramble small particles rather than stones were the issue and were much more difficult to see.

Of course it may not be that at all . . just wondering whether it might be worth considering some other kind of scan???

Jacks Jane might have a suggestion here that is much better than mine.

Was the xray what actually showed the stone up in the end parsnipbun?

with Damson it was not so much a stone as a completely calcified kidney (shrunken to the size of a thumbnail) that bits were coming off of -

and that was not picked up until they actually opened him up!! despite numerous xrays. They knew there was something odd about the kidney from the xrays in part because it was not showing well . . and were planning the kidney removal - but had no idea it was THAT odd.

Apparently (and I am no expert in this . . ) one of the kidneys on a rabbit is quite heavily shielded by . . . all sorts of other internal bits

With Bramble yes we did see the stones in the kidney on the xray.

I am only thinking CT/MRI as it might cover other possibilities as well -

The other scan that they do with the sort of rolling probe thing on the surface of the skin picks up some stuff but again did not reveal much for Damson (we did not have it offerred for Bramble as it was many years ago).

(apologies for rubbish reply - cannot recall quite which bits or which of the kidneys is shielded . . . we have had major fight here this morning between two of the babies again (different ones this time) . . and waiting to take two rabbits to vets for wound ops)

Thanks, will speak to vet about that then :)

I'm off to pick them both up in a bit, as at the moment, she's fine and i think it'd be best for them to be at home again.

We'll see how she does, thank you :)

Hope she's home soon.

They are indeed now both home.

First thing Ginger did was get into a litter tray and start eating.

First thing Biscuit did was hide in a tunnel

Hope this is the end of it now, my stress levels are so high!

So pleased to read that they are back home Gray. As you say, lets hope that's the end of that....! Fingers crossed normality resumes pronto!

Im so pleased she has come home and is once again her cheerful little self! Was Biccie in with her all the time?

Lotsa vibes still coming your way...and your new vet sounds lovely! :thumb::love:

Yup, can't have them spending time apart :)

Glad she's feeling better today :)

Would an ultrasound pick something like that up? I think most vets have an ultrasound thingy, but you'd need to go to a specialist place for a CT/MRI, I think...
