  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

GI stasis

Our little bun aged 4 has had another bout of GI stasis. His diet is very good, full of hay and veg and a very small amout of pellets. He went downhill very fast and was on IV and fluids in the vets Friday and yesterday.

Last night there was some poops (about 40) that were very small and black and be is eating the odd treat but nothing else. He's very lethargic and this morning was grinding his teeth.

We have been giving him his meds critical care. I'm worried about overloading his stomach if he isn't pooing as normal.

Are his pooing and eating habits positive signs?

I'm sorry your bunny is unwell. Did the vet give him pain relief? A rabbit in pain will usually not eat and also tooth grinding is a sign of pain. Also did the vet give you some medication to continue with at home? I presume the vet did a blood glucose test to exclude a blockage?

It is good that your rabbit is producing poops and it is not abnormal for them to be of an abnormal shape when recovering from GI Stasis.

I would continue to give him syringe feeds and his meds. Also try him with some wet herbs. Sometimes it's more successful if you crush the herbs to release the smell.

Sending him lots of vibes.

Assuming a blockage was ruled out by the vet, you need to make sure he's eating. If he's not eating on his own, you need to syringe feed him every few hours. He can't produce poo without food going in. If you haven't got any Critical Care (or similar powder), you can soak his pellets in boiling water and leave them to go to mush. Add a bit of apple or carrot puree to make it flow better. Try a teaspoon if you haven't got a syringe, although it could get messy.

Or try some baby food pouches (veg ones - no milk, meat, eggs, cheese). They can be fed straight from the packet as they have a nozzle.

Sending positive vibes. He was producing poo, so good sign. Pain meds, syringe feeds, fluids, and motility meds are important for his recovery.
Also, stasis often has cause-dental issues, gas pain, stress, pain elsewhere are a few common ones.
