  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Fast breathing/odd posture: UD 22/3 Gone to the Bridge

Thank you. She's not having a good day today, just sitting and breathing badly. when she's like this I feel bad waiting until Monday but I think it would overall be a mistake to make any decisions without seeing the specialist and checking the state of her mass/lungs as I personally always try to get an answer :(

Oh poor Bigwig! She looks so adorable on her bed [emoji178]

I really hope the vet has answers and she gets better soon. Sending more vibes and kisses from Mr Chief xx

So sorry that things are not looking good

Oh I'm so sorry sending more vibes for her.

It must be excruciating waiting for the specialist, would your regular vets or the specialist nurses at the specialists be able to support her breathing with some oxygen?

Although it was ages ago I think when Flopsy was admitted he was put on oxygen and given nebulisers to try and support his breathing so he could fight the infection.

Thanks all. I really appreciate the vibes  She's been to our regular vets twice this week and didn't improve on oxygen. She's going back tomorrow morning too although not sure what else for, luckily she doesn't stress at the regular trips. She's no longer abdominal breathing/increased effort, but she will sit usually with her head up and her nostrils will be flaring. :( She's coughing a lot but often she makes no sound now, I asked the specialist and he said coughing in rabbits often happens with no noise.

Sending lots more vibes x

She's having an X ray at the referrals to see what's changed. The specialist says we have 2 options, to up the dosage of the medications she's on until she is no longer comfortable or arrange a CT scan prior to surgery and possibly the lung mass/damage could be removed with the affected lung lobe but he advised it's highly risky with a high chance of complications. She's already uncomfortable and not eating well so I'm not sure how long we'd give her of high doses as we already have been giving her maximum doses. We'll just see what the X ray says first of all. She's had a weekend of some sunshine, plenty of veg and last night she came upstairs and ate her veg in our bed having cuddles

Poor girlie  Surgery would certainly be a major issue. I hope that the Xrays give some more useful information. Sending lots of vibes for her x

Oh poor girl. Sending vibes for her, hopefully they can get to the bottom of things for you all today x

Thank you xx Surprisingly her X ray looked better, the vet said he was very surprised as he agrees her breathing is very poor and laboured. We have little options, to try steroids or up the medication she is on but we feel we have watched her struggle all last week and are unsure trialing medication will be of any use when ultimately she will be PTS. We can have a few days/week with her but it's been very difficult to watch her breathe the way she is, over the weekend she was spoilt with all her favourite foods but nearing the end she was struggling. We are having a think

Oh its such a hard choice isn't it.

I know for me steroids have been an absolute godsend with chest infections but I don't know if they have similar impacts on little buns.

Bug hugs for you all x

If in the last chance saloon I would try the corticosteroid and keep her on Penicillin too. Just my unqualified opinion. I am assuming that her heart is not enlarged ? Topping up the Vibes for her.

Oh, I'm so, so sorry you're having to make such a difficult decision. It must be so hard to see her struggle like this... Whatever you decide, I hope Bigwig will be as comfortable as she can be right now..

 Thank you all xx I spoke with the vet face to face and went into more detail about the X rays, her heart wasn't enlarged but her lungs were which showed how much effort she'd had to put into breathing. He advised it's rare in rabbits but often seen in cats with asthma. She could have a tumour further up which was not seen on X ray but would be inoperable. Steroids could improve her breathing but make an infection worse. When I saw her I decided it would be kindest to let her go, she passed while I held her within a second. It was the most peaceful put to sleep of any of my pets which I am grateful for.
