  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC, Weight loss, low bloods & abscess..the list goes on!

She's definitely not as she was and her poo's have gone tiny again :-( I'm all set ready to be at the vets door for 9am

Poor girlie  I'd ask the Vet to get some fluids running through her (IV) and also get a blood profile if possible to see how her kidneys are doing. Some Lactulose may also be useful as it can mop up some of the toxins that may be proliferating as a result of ingesting Clindamycin (if she has done so). Lactulose is also an osmotic laxative and used in conjunction with fluid therapy and prokinetics can be very beneficial in some situations whereby the GI tract is in trouble. The Vet may also consider prescribing an abx called Metronidazole to address the potential of clostridial enteritis:

Finally can give an update now..we've had a difficult day but I'll try and keep it short as possible!
Was at our usual vets for 9. Instantly felt different to how they normally are with us, I interpreted it as a "oh it's her again, and she's fussing about nothing etc"
They didn't see the problem with the antirobe, kind of brushed it off as they'd treated rabbits like it before no problems, but if I didn't want to give then I didn't have to but she's not strong enough for surgery yet.
Said her poos we're dry and small but she said her stomach was making noise etc.
Gave sub-q fluids and a new bottle of cisapride and that was that.

I wasn't convinced, and decided I needed to advocate for Millie a bit harder and took her for 2nd opinion elsewhere.
They said could feel an impaction. But their X-ray machine was jammed so couldn't X-ray. They rang Chine House and we had a mad dash there and arrived at 11.59 and they shut at 12!

Craig wasn't there so saw another vet and she said could feel an impaction too. Kept her in and gave Vomend (?!) according to my invoice and they rang Craig on his day off. Apparently she perked up there and ate and they decided she could wait until Monday to be seen by Craig.
So I collected her late afternoon and she's now at home with me.

So we've had a busy day.
Full of different emotions about how we've been treated by our usual vets but after initially feeling really bad for going behind their back for another opinion I'm glad I did. She's so precious to me and I knew there was something wrong. Lesson learned today is trust your instincts and always advocate for my bunnies because they don't have a voice.

Thank you all for the help and vibes

'Zomend' is Metoclopramide, a prokinetic. I am glad that you sought a second opinion. Sending lots more vibes xx

Hi Laura

I'm so glad you've updated - I have been thinking of you and Millie all day!

You've done excellently well in advocating for Millie :) You certainly can go to any vet you wish and you *don't* have to tell your regular vet what you're doing. The new vet will ask for your permission to contact your regular vet to get the history, but what you do it up to you.

Did Chine House say anything about the antirobe? It sounds like your regular vet will lose your custom if they carry on treating you with such disrespect. Perhaps you should remind them who pays their wages!

Vomend is another name for metaclopromide, a gut motility drug:

Well done on trusting your gut. My previous vets treated us the same and it got to the point where I dreaded going because I felt like they thought I was a total nutter! At the end of the day you are paying (good money!) for a service and if they're not giving you the service that you need for your lovely bunny then you are well within your rights to go elsewhere.
I hope Millie does well over weekend :)
X

I'm so glad to read you went for a second opinion when something didn't feel right.
She's such a lucky girl to have such a loving care giver.

I mentioned my antirobe concern but again that vet questioned my assertion that it can potentially be fatal to rabbits if ingested! I don't think she's exotic specialist though she was just one of their vets doing the weekend rotation I think. Which was why she rang Craig I'd guess. I've not given any since Friday morning and we are just doing Ranitidine, Sulfatrim and the critical care.

I rang my usual vet to "update them" (read:make them feel bad) and told them Chine House had admitted her! Bit petty of me but I wanted them to know they had missed something because they had dismissed my concerns!

How is Millie doing this morning ?

I've seen her nibble some hay, yay! She's eaten her CC off my spoon like a good girl too. She's moved around a little but I think it looks more like she is trying to get comfy, she's not very relaxed. She's quite hunched and she's normally a loaf or stretched out kind of rabbit. I've seen her do a wee and there was a milky slightly sludgey residue to it too. Going to post a couple of photos of her this morning in a minute.

I'm trying to analyse her blood results too. I have 4 tests from a four week period, 3 are in house, 1 is from nationwide labs using a rabbit profile. The others are using a canine one I believe and then were compared using rabbit ref levels from a book.
The nationwide labs one has different reference levels to the in house one, presumably because the in house ones used a canine profile so the ref levels are different to rabbit ones?!
Trying to figure out if I can accurately compare the in house results to the correct rabbit references or will it somehow be wrong.
I.e here's her WBC results:

6/1/17 4.15 (Ref 5.50-16.90)
23/1/17 1.1 (3.3-12) *rabbit ref*
25/1/17 1.03 (5.50-16.90)
2/2/17 2.57 (5.50-16.90)

So if I've interpreted this correctly, her WBC was in the normal range the first time when comparing it to the rabbit references of 3.3-12 (this was prior to starting panacur)
Then it dropped dangerously low, then the third time it was still low. On the 26th the panacur was stopped, and the fourth result showed an improvement but is still low?

What other results should I be focusing on?
Thanks in advance Jane!

Just dropping by to give lovely Millie some vibes. Good she is eating of her own accord. I hope she continues to progress well enough for that op. Pleased too that you got further opinion

Good, well at least you've got the eating bit covered!

If you don't do the antirobe, what are your plans to tackle the abscess?

Btw I don't think you were petty at all to ring your vet! They ought to know where their shortcomings are so they can improve (one would hope!)

Here's my girl this morning, not looking so great. She has managed to put a bit of weight on just lately, but not that much and in that hunched up position she looks like a blown up balloon!
