Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

EC, Weight loss, low bloods & abscess..the list goes on!

Been to see the specialist today, he's not totally convinced she has EC and he's changed her meds around.
Stopped the Panacur in case it's hindering the bloods issues, stopped the metacam because he thinks she's relatively pain free plus that could be causing ulcers, changed the baytril to sulfatrim, and added Ranitidine back in. Back in 10 days to re do bloods.
No improvement and they'll do full body X-ray and possibly bone marrow analysis.
The abscess does need surgery but needs managing the best I can for now until everything's reassessed a week on Monday.

Update

Millie's coped quite well this week, been to our usual vet tonight and have a little bit of good news to report! We have weight gain and she's now 1.36 yay!
And the bloods have had slight improvements too yay! So looks like the Panacur was impacting on her bloods. But the levels still aren't good so back to repeat again in 10 days.
And as for her abscess, the outer has receeded but they think it's got deeper internally and can feel that it's spread upwards too. So we're on Antirobe capsules to pour the antibiotic powder into the wound to see if that helps in the mean time while we wait for more white and red cells improvement before surgery on it.

Sorry that this will be a rushed post, but please make sure that she is not able to lick the wound at all once antirobe is insitu. Antirobe is 'Clindamycin' which can be fatal to Rabbits if ingested :

http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/?id=-456446

Lagomorphs - Oryctolagus cuniculus domesticus - Domestic rabbit:[/B]

Use is contraindicated as lincosamides cause potentially fatal clostridial enterotoxaemia (Clostridial Enteritis and Enterotoxicosis in Rabbits). (B546)
"Do not use." (B602.41.w41)

Note: Clindamycin has been used topically in the treatment of abscesses in rabbits:
In antibiotic impregnated poly-methyl methacrylate (AIPMMA) beads (See: Production of Antibiotic-Impregnated Beads (Techniques)).
In some cases of head abscesses, a 25 mg clindamycin capsule can be pricked using a needle, and then sutured into the cavity of the abscess to provide a slow release antibiotic. Simultaneous probiotic use in the rabbit's diet is recommended. (B606.4.w4)

I am pleased there are such good things to report - very encouraging!

Usually the antibiotic (antirobe capsules) are stitched into the wound - is that the case with Millie's abscess wound?

Hi Jane, Hi MightyMax
Thanks for the info, very helpful. But I'm majorly panicking now tho!
No, it's not a stitched in capsule, I have to pour the powder into the wound and we have a hydrogel to put over the top but I found it very difficult to do it this morning because her abscess is under her neck/throat/chest area?!so it's a tricky area to get to. And then I have to put the gel on but what if I miss a bit or she licks the gel off?!

You're welcome

Have you asked your vet about this? Can she access the wound to lick it easily?

Is it anything like referred to in this article?

This is the area of the abscess. I'll avoid posting the really icky photos! The specialist said he thought it would need surgery on it as did my vets initially but they seem to be suggesting there's a slim chance we could avoid that if this antirobe works. I wasn't optimistic anyway and now the seemingly high risk associated with it if I don't administer it correctly has got me rather worried! Not sure what to do now..

I've just read your story. I wouldn't use the capsules personally. I made a bad call to take my bunny to a more local vet once, she diagnosed abscess & inserted those beads. It was lanced rather than cleaned out completely. I then took my bun to usual vet at that time (Frances harcourt brown) who had to write to the local vet & advise against such use x (stitched up wounds are fine, it just ingesting it orally that is a risk)

Isn't she gorgeous. The wound looks pretty standard for an open abscess to me . Maybe call vet tomorrow & discuss your concerns, or get 2nd opinion. Its a shame cos bits of his treatment plan sound much better

Thanks for your input Joey&boo...Earlier I'd been saying I don't think she's been quite as bright as she has been and now I'm getting a bit paranoid. I decided to give her Metacam and nearly went to my out of hours vet but she's perked up a bit now, chewing a tunnel. Perhaps I need to call my vet tomorrow?!

Good plan I reckon. Lots of vibes x

Thanks, it has got smaller which is good, but its got deeper too, which is not good! They are going to call the specialist again to see his opinion on her bloods on Monday, so maybe I can ask them to find out his opinion on this antibiotic too.

x/post again! Vibes and advice very much appreciated thank you x

I wouldn't be so worried if the wound was lanced and drained and stitched up ..

I have replied to your PM xx

I agree with J+B If there is any chance at all that your Bunny has ingested some Clindamycin then definitely seek Veterinary attention today. Lots more vibes being sent x

She's definitely not as she was and her poo's have gone tiny again :-( I'm all set ready to be at the vets door for 9am

How is Millie doing today, and how are you? x

Doesn't seem herself. She's sitting in one spot in her room, with a similar demeanour and position she had when she was really poorly. Her poos are tiny, although we have them still which is good, and she did move across the room when I got the pellets out today. I'm going straight to the vet for 9am but I don't know which vet...mine which have given us the potentially lethal medication, but they have the whole unusual, complicated history and will see us the second I walk in the door, or the different practice for second opinion but I don't know if the vet will even be there, no appointment and no history, but do I trust my normal vets now?!
This is so difficult!

Can you seek an opinion from a recommended rabbit savvy vet? I know you need to get seen asap ...

Look here maybe:

Or begin a new thread in Rabbit Chat with "Rabbit savvy vet needed *urgently* in (your location)"

Good luck xx
