  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cyst on shoulder

My one year old rabbit is currently at the vets. She has a large lump on her shoulder that is filled with cystic fluid which is clear. The vet has drained it and planned to remove the cyst but I’ve been told that they can’t at risk of damaging/removing muscle mass. Vet has said it will probably fill back up and vet is unsure if there’ll be any impact now on her front leg and did mention amputation as worst case scenario.

Has anyone known anything like this?

Yes, many years ago one of my Rabbits, Jack, had a cystic like mass on his thigh. He had a punch biopsy from the mass and Xrays and the results came back as being a benign chondromyxoid fibroma. He had the mass removed but it grew back relatively quickly. I opted not to put him through more Surgery and he was put on to palliative care. He lived for about another year until the mass was too big for him to use his leg and was causing him pain. Limb amputation was not an option due to both his age ( eight ) and a pre-existing health condition (pododermatitis) sore hocks effecting both hind legs.

I'm sorry to hear this about your bunny. I think I would want to know exactly what the lump is. Do you know if the vet sent any of the fluid for histology?

Sending loads of vibes for you and your bunny, really hope vets can find a solution to help him xxx

Sending lots of vibes, I don’t have any experience of this so I can’t advise xx
