  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Barney is home and doing well U/D 26th May

I agree! FHB is so nice , I usually find vets and doctors a bit scary but Frances is such a pleasure to deal with. When she showed me xrays she took her time pointing out everything, even getting a rabbit skull to show me where the problem lied. I wish i lived in harrogate, then she would be my vet all the time xx

She's fantastic isn't she:D

:)
thanks. I guess I am also a bit nervous about what she is going to say about Barney, I feel bad for not taking him sooner and i dotn want her to think i am a bad owner.

She's well aware of the deal that the 'average' bunny gets, Barney has had far better than that. Barney has been getting veterinary care so far and now you are taking him to a specialist - that's what she will see, therefore a caring owner.

She really is wonderful, just as Mimi75 described. She will frequently ask about bunnies that aren't at the consultation, how bonding is going etc. She will both tell it how it is and give loads of reassurance at the same time. Ask loads of questions of anything you are concerned about - she will be happy to answer. Good luck. We have an appointment at 12.00 so might be on the way out as you are waiting. (The car park is only tiny but there's loads of on street parking nearish)

thanks. i am just conscious that i started off doing several little things wrong when i first got my bunnies and am aware that i might find out that there are loads more yet.

is it easy to find? i looked on google maps and it seems ok. I am just worried about being late as i have to work in the morning then go back to work in afternoon.

one good thing that has come out of this is that i think my normal vet has realised how little he knows about rabbit specifics :censored: next time i will trust my instincts and not be scared to tell a vet that i think they are wrong

It's easy to find for me because it's just at the edge of Harrogate at my side. I wouldn't expect to be called in at 12.30 as FHB has been away for 2 weeks and this is her first week back and she will be fully booked (Ruth, other bunny vet is on holiday this week) and there is likely to be a few complex cases she's dealing with... because she takes her time with people sometimes she can run a little bit behind. It's worth it though as you know you won't be rushed when you get in.

I realised same with my local vets. They are not bad but I realise that FHB is in a completely different league.

thanks for the tip off. we might bump into each other then by sounds of it. Barney will be in blue/grey carrier. say hi if you see us

I think a lot of us on here could probably look back on things with our bunnies & think 'I should have done things differently' owning a bunny (or any other furry)is a huge learning curve & I can honestly say there are times over the years when I've got things completely wrong but I have learnt from them.I'm certainly no expert & there's loads of things I still don't know after 15 years of having bunnies:shock: being a member on here is a huge help tho. As 'bunny buddy' has already said you have been doing your very best to get Barney treated,it's not your fault if your vet is not the most rabbit savvy.
As for directions as you're coming in on the A59 Skipton road you will need to turn right at 'The Skipton' pub, then it is your first turning on the left.there is a row of terraced houses on the right(with cars parked on road) just after these houses is the vets which is a detatched building only very slightly set back from the road with a small carpark. If you can't get on the car park I usually park on the street next left which is pretty much opposite the surgery(think it's st Johns rd) hope this is of some help.:D and remember she's lovely & you are doing all you can to help him so no one is going to think you're a bad bunny mummy.good luck with your little fellow:love:

Just got back to work...

Barney is staying overnight, FHB is going to xray him tomorrow and then do surgery if the xray shows that she needs to. She thinks it is one (possibly 2) of his back teeth causing the problem but will know more after the xray. She says that if she has to take one out he should be ok but if its too then it will be more complicated and cross that bridge when we come to it. She thinks she can feel something under his eye which could be the source of the infection. I have to call tomorrow at 11 for an update.

Sorry I hadn't seen this until now. I may have seen you sitting there, I was trying to see if a Dutch was in a carrier in the waiting room. There was a lady with a lilac carrier with a lionhead, and a carrier I couldn't see into. I had an embarrassingly pink carrier:lol: and a grey carrier and was babbling on about getting blood test results. My receipt says 12:54 when we left so you must have been waiting there.

I hope Barney goes on okay, he should feel so much better when his teeth are sorted out. I shall be looking for updates, hopefully good ones.

Yes i was sitting there. Which bunny was the sandy coloured lop in the pink carrier? was that you? he/she is absolutely gorgeous.

i was sitting really quiet as i wasnt feeling well with a stupid headache. I thought it was a long haired cat in the lilac carrier?! lol. She was in before me so i didnt get in til about quarter past but didnt really mind waiting. It was really weird leaving Barney though! She put him into a different box so i took away his empty carrier!

Really well,Frances removed his one remaining stitch:roll: naughty Nobby! It was just over a week so he had healed well & he had another layer of stitching underneath so she wasn't too concerned:)
It's understandable that you will worry about Barney,I really hope you get some good news tomorrow.:)

The sandy lop was Binky, he was keeping his brother Shadow company as he was the patient. The other carrier had Artie in it with sore feetsies:( It didn't stop him banging his feet to tell them he was fed up though :lol:

It could have been a kitty in the carrier, I just assumed it was a bunny and my eyesight is not that great

Yeah, it's awful leaving them. It's great when you see the veg delivery though, you definitely realise it's a bunny practice when you see big trays of kale arriving :D

 yes I saw a broccoli crate delivery the other day!I always nearly always see one of the vet nurses(long dark hair in pony tail) coming in with a massive bag of fresh picked dandies too!

i phoned up at 11 but she had only just got in so they said i would get a message in the afternoon. what did the other lady tell me to call back at 11 then, huh?!? cant stand all this waiting................

Barney is staying until Sunday. He does only have an abscess, NOT a tumour (yay!). but his xrays have shown that he has a bone condition - his bones are too dense rather than being too porous (which is much more common). FHB is doing a blood test which will show more, he could have kidney disease, or it could be a dietary issue he had at a young age and no longer be a problem, the blood results will tell. soo good news and bad.
