Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Advice or thoughts about our poorly elderly bunny please

Hi, thank you again to everyone for your replies.
Update - I did a fresh bowl of food, water-softened his dry food, mashed a little, and some tiny pieces carrot mashed a bit, and some raisins.
At first he didn't touch it, I left him completely alone for a while and then came back and looked - he had eaten two-thirds of it!
I left him again, and came back and he has eaten it all. He's also done a lot of poos at last, they are smaller but it's a good amount.
The abscess seems to be smaller too.
Been to vet and slightly upped his dose of painkiller. His gut sounds were good. Agreed that since the developments this afternoon, we will see how he goes overnight.
I am so relieved - I know things are still in the balance and that I mustn't get carried away but I am glad that he gave a clearer message, he seemed to be saying 'look I'm eating and pooing just now.'
Feel like we've been through the mill a bit today. We love him so much
Thank you for the support here today. x

That sounds great. Quite often rabbits don't want to eat after dentals so hopefully that was all normal.

I leave water softened pellets down 24/7 now, but they are quite messy. Maybe if you leave soft and dry for a while to see which he prefers? I hope the abscess continues to get smaller.

You could maybe try other variations with the soften pellets such as a little bit of grated apple/pear or even a very tiny amount of banana, just to get him initially interested. I've used these mixes before in the past with an elderly bun.

I really wish you luck, as I know how difficult it can be to know what to do for the best when you get to this stage.

Wow that is good news. Are you still giving the loxicom in one dose?

Sounds like you are doing the right thing continuing and trying different things. It's amazing how a rabbit can turn around if they are on the right course of treatment. Let's hope he is back to his old self soon and you have a few more years with him.

So pleased to hear things are a little better for him, hope he continues to improve, just cherish every moment you have. Give him a noserub from a wellwisher.

I just wanted to give an update on our little boy - he is doing ok! He is eating more, eating up full bowls of his pellets, and his poos are bigger now.
Thank you again for all the kind replies here.

I just popped in here to read as I had dental bun who lived to be 12!

For the last couple of years of his life, due to a general lack of teeth, he ate pellets mushed up with water and passed away naturally, when he was ready.

Oats are good for keeping the weight on and soak nicely.

I'll add some vibes for continued recovery.

xx
