Young Bun
hi, i got a new 8 week old bun on thursday night to keep my other 2 house rabbits company, i think its a lion head/english cross, ive been checking its sex and to compare i was checking my first rabbit frank a dutch and he has a small white spot at the top of the fleshy part of where his penis comes out, i read maybe rabbit syphilis? but it sayes this mainly occurs in breeding rabbits, frank is only like 5-6 months old and went through a humping phase just before and shotrly after i had him fixed but he has never bread. please help.

also the new bun is screaming, first time i heard it i was at her cage in the kitchen petting her then i turned around to move a chair so i could put the cage at the wall and she hopped out and i stood on her, she let out this horrific high pitched scream and it chilled my blood but i immediately shifted my weight off her and picked her up, she seemed fine, very scared but i watched her over the next few hours and she was hopping about with my other buns and didnt show any signs of pain, that was fri now about an hour ago the 3 of them were laying behind my chair and i heard a short sharp scream when i went round they were laying in altogether with legs kicked out and i thought frank maybe had bit her so i put frank and jess in the kitchen cage and kept her out here with me, then she screamed again, just laying on the mat and it was about 4 full seconds so i comforted her and she was very shook up, so i put her back down and she didnt move and looked very scared so i set the video cam up and 10 mins later she screamed again, its realy scaring me, ive checked her over and she doesnt seem to be in pain anywhere, i woke my gf up and she said maybe its because i split them up?

i hate myself for not paying attention when i stood on her, i realy feel its going to be hard to bond with her, all my rabbits are lickers, when i bend down to frank and jess they lick my forehead and any part of me lol they are very affectionate with me, the new bun has bonded very well with my gf and has licked her head a few times now, so im just going to give her space and time to get used to me, i cant help but feel maybe shes scared of me? but if anyone knows anything about this, is it normal? ive never hear a rabbit make that kind of noise before and it shook me up, will i take her to the vet?

Re the possible syphillis, this can also be transmitted from the Mother to her Kits at birth. So ANY Rabbit can be effected, not just those being used for breeding. So you need to get your Vet to check the Bun over and if it is syphillis ALL your Rabbits will require treatment.

Re the screaming baby Rabbit. Screaming occurs when a Rabbit is in SEVERE pain and/or is TERRIFIED. Given the history of an accident I would strongly advise you yo get the baby checked by a Vet ASAP.

How did you go about bonding the Baby with your other Rabbits ?

Did you not quarantine Baby initially? 8 weeks is an extremely vulnerable age and Babies can get serious gut problems if exposed to environmental or physiological stress such as a new bonding, especially into an established bonded pair.

I would keep Baby separate for now and provide a secure base for him/her. Then try to get him/her to a Vet, preferably today.

dont think i can get them to a vet untill monday :( but its realy freaking me out, buns still ramdomley screaming, paying attention to her for the last 4 hours shes done it 3 times and 2 of those time i think she was sleeping? i honestly think something else has spooked her, bad dreams maybe? i had them in the garden this morning for a few hours but i was there the whole time, **** i just dont know but its breaking my heart. i feel so sorry for the poor wee thing

as for the bonding it went pretty well, i put them all upstairs in the back room and let them suss eachother out, there was a bit of mounting but i stopped it straight away, then after almost an hour i put my 2 in the kitchen and let the new bun run around the living room for a few hours then i took all 3 up and bathed em together lol this worked very well for me last time and i think its worked again, right after they where grooming each other and laying down together. my 2 are very friendly after the inital shock of a new bun they seem to just accept it, frank is sort of a messer, binkys all the time, as where jess is more of a mother lol hes always looking for danger and grooming. when im not in or sleeping they all get put in my bunny-proofed kitchen and the new bun gets locked in the cage as where my other 2 have no cage (just the base of one)

so if this white spot is syphillis it can be passed on to my other 2? since this has just showen up is it poss he caught it from the new bun? can it manifest in 4 days? i dont realy wana check her untill i can figure out what the screamings about. she just woke herself up again with a lower sound now. i mean honestly she seems fine, eating, drinking and pooing i realy think its mental now

she was seprated form a big litter of 7, could this just be she misses her family? i dont know if that sorta bond would form so quickly? maybe just misses being around lots of buns?

A rabbit screaming means it urgently needs seen by a vet. They need to be able to hide pain so that predators in the wild don't see them as weak and attack them. So to be making a noise means it is extremely serious and badly in need of help.

I agree, she needs a vet today for a check over. The fact that the first time you heard it was after you stood on her sounds like she is in pain.

As others have said, buns only scream if in pain or utterly terrified.

Accidents do happen with buns, but now she needs checked over.

You need to take all 3 to a vet a to checked for Syphilis but the one that is screaming needs to see a vet now
You cannot put it off
Sorry to be harsh but screaming means the problem is urgent and you have both a moral and legal obligation to get her to a vet

Do you have a Pets At Home near you with a companion care vet in them? They may be easier and cheaper to see on a Sunday
but please get her to a vet ASAP..and let us know how she goes

This sounds very much like a neuological problem manifesting itself in somnolent seizures. I would put EC high on the list of possibilities. *If* it is EC then all your other Rabbits are at risk and they ALL require treatment. It really is important to do all you can to get them to a Vet today.

Hi, Welcome to the forum

Rabbits are prey animals and they stay quiet so as to avoid danger. They only scream when they are scared or in agony so I would say she/he needs to see a vet urgently. Perhaps she broke something when you accidently stood on her and it very painful.

I've moved your thread to health so you get more replies.

I agree with everyone else. Rabbits just do not scream normally. I have had over 50 rabbits, they have been ill, they have been scared, they have had fights. Only one ever screamed - when the dog got her.

She needs to see a vet NOW, not later or tomorrow. She is obviously in extreme pain.

Good luck at the vets, let us know.

I would separate her in the meantime from your other rabbits and treat her as you would any other sick animal, give her a hide, some food and water, and let her be in a quiet place with no stress.

hi all thanks for the replys! i ended up talking a vet into letting me bring her to his house, it cost me a fortune so i only brought the one and ill get the others to my vet tomorrow about the spot.

anyway i couldnt go till after 12 when my gf got home and were just back, ive been up all night with the poor wee bun and im very sure its only happening when shes sleeping, to be honest the vet wasnt very helpful, he checked her over and said there didnt seem to be any physical problems so thats good but thats as far as his expersise went, he said maybe its her adjusting to her new home? wtfs that mean and why wasnt she like that on the first night? i told him on the first 2 days she had the tinyst poos ive ever seen, i dont know what the girl that sold me was feeding her and she wont answer her phone, but after a few days of hay and excel bun pelets the poo is fine and she seems alot more relaxed now. also when we got her she was stinking lol very dirty and smelly, i thought maybe the girl was mistreating her? but she seemed very nice, altho she had the buns in a box in her front room and wouldnt let me go out the back to see the parents or the hutch, maybe its something to do with the transition from outdoors to indoors?

also the vet said maybe she ate somethng hard and had pain passing it? also shes realy took to the litter box very fast! the first 2 days she wee'd a few times on her blanket but its all been in the box for 2 days now, the poos are 80% in the cage and the rest everywhere else, so shes learned realy fast and this leaves me to belive her mental state in on the ball.

anyway ive been awake a very long time and am starting to see spots in my eyes some im gona get a few hours sleep and let the gf keep an eye on her, ill post a few pics when i wake, thanks again all and good night

Well done for taking her :) I'm sure the others will be fine until tomorrow. At least you can now be partially sure its not broken bones. I don't trust the diagnosis though, as you say she didnt make those noises at first, every pet shop rabbit changes homes at least twice in their lives, and they dont react like this, and from what you say there doesnt seem to be a particular trigger for it. Might be worth taking her to your usual rabbit-savvy vet tomorrow with the other two, or if you don't have a rabbit-savvy vet, ring one that you know is and explain the situation and ask if they think you need to bring her in.

The having trouble passing something is feasible I guess though.

The fact that the girl wouldnt let you see the parents is VERY suspect. I imagine there was something very wrong either with how she was treating the buns, or their condition.

The sudden change in temperature can be stressful and usually results in a heavy moult which can bring some buns down, but it doesnt induce anything like the screaming behaviour you mentioned. It really is a mystery. I hope you manage to get it sorted soon and find out what is causing it. I really hope it can be cured.

There is a trainee vet on here called VickiVet or VikkiVet, might be worth PMing her for her opinion, she wants to be a rabbit specialist.

I think it is feasible that a baby rabbit can express extreme terror like this, it sounds like this little one has had an awful lot to deal with since being removed from her litter, I am assuming that the adult rabbits are neutered but I would personally give this little one at least 2-3 weeks, maybe a month or so even to get vaccinations done before introducing to an adult pair of rabbits, ideally house her near them in a puppy pen so she can see them & smell them but, is not threatened as it's unlikely she can defend herself should she need to. How old is she? What did the vet say about her weight? It wouldn't surprise me if she is too young & hasn't been fully weaned properly.

You really need to make her feel secure ATM by giving her a little safe area to herself so she can work out the new environment & sounds, smells etc & learn to trust you before introducing her to all the things at once.

If you do this & she is still demonstrating terror then she will need to be double checked by X-ray I reckon, I wouldnt have thought many kits could walk away from being trodden on unscathed, her bones are very soft ATM so a fracture wouldnt necessarily be obvious on a vet check alone

I hope she'll be ok poor little thing x

had buns at my vet today, ok so for the spot he gave frank antibiotics i have to mix with water and syringe into his mouth lol he hates it!!

as for my little black one, he said her breathings great and he cant find any injurys i told him i thought it might be something to do with bad dreams because she was sleeping when she when it started, he said maybe when i stood on her it scared her and she was reliving it along with all the stress of new home and new friends,or even perhaps how she was treated in her last house, also he thinks she is older than 8 weeks as she is not very baby-ish at all, she also got her vhd jab while we were there, been no screams from sunday night and she has been very friendly today, i had to laugh at her messing about in the car on the way back, she even kicked out and chilled when she got home, my other 2 fell out with me for almost 2 days when they got their jabs lol!

ill let you guys know how they are keeping over the next few days

Good news about the vet examination, I hope she doesn't have anything underlying and comes through the vaccine alright, she may be off colour being quite young and having it, so keep a close eye on input and output which vaccine did she have?

I'm not sure what you meant by 'messing' about in the car, I'm assuming she was in her carrier, I hope you'll be careful about easing her in gently to all her new surroundings now and in my opinion bathing them to get them to bond is a bit extreme and more likely to cause stress and is a bit dangerous in regards altering their temperature so I'd go for a small neutral area when she is a bit bigger and if all is well gradually increase the space, I think it might be worth getting your older doe neutered if she isn't already and the younger baby before you do bond them as a trio for all their sakes
