  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My rabbit has something wrong with his face!!!

How old is he and how long has he been like this? Could he have had some kind of fit? i would take him to the vets with a view to having him treated for E.Cuniculi.

Yes, one of my Bunnies developed a sort of Bells Palsy or 'wonky face' after a severe ear infection. It was thought to be due to damage to the facial nerves caused by the infection. I would take your Rabbit to the Vet for a check-up

He is nearly 3 years old, I only noticed it this morning. He is still his usual playful self and eating as normal, but it just looks really odd. I shall take him the vets just to make sure all is well! They really make you worry don't they!!!

My Mr. Buns had that and his blood tests came back a couple days ago and were positive for E.C. and Pasteurella.

It looks like you caught it in time - let me know what the vet says.

Mr. Buns had stopped eating and developed GI Statis before I caught it and did not survive but it sounds like you caught it in time. I'll be thinking of you.

I'm really scared now, I don't want to lose him!!! Can these infections be treated? and what exactly are they? Is it something I have done? :( :(

Yes things like that can be treated - but the sooner that treatment is started, the better the likelihood of a good outcome. If treatment is delayed, infections can get quite deep-seated and difficult to treat, and if e.cuniculi is involved, the infection can be treated but sometimes permanent damage can be done

The sooner you can get your bunny to the vet the better - I know it's a Sunday and would therefore be expensive, but personally I would ring a vet today, they may think it's worth seeing him because if he needs some kind of treatment, it is better if it gets started straight away.

Good luck, hope your gorgeous man is ok xxx

something wrong with my rabbits face

This happened to one of my bunnies after he had a routine dental :( It did not affect him in any way and he had a normal life :) my neice also had this with her rabbit after he had a dental op  :( although it was never explained to us (we both had the same vet) why this had happened  :? Is it possible that your bunny could have injured himself somehow :?:

I took Neo the vets this morning and they think it might be E.Cunulini, they have given me a syringe with paste in which i have to give to him daily!!

He's then going back on Monday for a check up.

Is this a dangerous infection? Will he survive?

poor little guy..sending nosey rubs and healing vibes.
this disease is not an easy one but every bun..every outcome is different..
you were prompt but sometimes theres nothing till the bund suddenlydies having seizures or a stroke..
the paste will have been panacur right?

im not the person to ask..i only know what ive read on the net!

this article should be helpful

Have a look at Sunny's picture:

Sunny11104.jpg

Notice the similarities? Sunny's right side (on the picture left) of the face is like fallen in which makes the left side look swollen. My vet did all sorts of tests and they all came back clear. In the end, Sunny got referred to a specialist and was diagnosed with a damaged facial nerve, which caused muscle wastage in his right side. It is thought that the main facial nerve got damaged in a fight with one of my other rabbits. Luckily, it does not affect his eating or anything else other than the fact that his face is not symetric anymore (you can see that on the picture which was taken straight from the front and yet, you can only see one eye). The only medication he has is artificial tears in that eye as he cannot close it properly and therefore suffers from dry eye. He has been like this for about three years now without any ill effects (except for the eye).

So don't panic... it might just be something simple. Although nothing can be done for Sunny and he will always be a little disfigured, it doesn't bother him at all and he lives a perfectly normal life. He will be 7 in May!

I have a client who boards her rabbit with me and her bun was perfectly normal and then one day when she came home from work her buns mouth had done exactly the same as yours and that too was due to nerve damage. She leads a completely normal life and it doesn't bother her at all. I had a rabbit who had EC and she made a complete recovery.
Don't worry I am sure everything will be ok.

Sunny is absolutely lovely!! :D

Yes the vets gave him Panacur and it is fun trying to get him to take it!! We have no other rabbits but I do have a kitten who plays with him a lot , but she's not rough with him!

He needs to go back on Monday so i'm not sure what they will tell me, as they where a bit confused to what it might be!!

You really think the worst though, but hearing from other people is quite relieving to hear that there rabbit has the same and they're fine! (I'd be lost with out this forum!)

I don't think Neo is bothered as i've been spoiling him rotten with all his favourite treats! :D

Thankyou everyone for your advice and let you know how it goes on Monday.

If they want to do lots of tests do I think I should get them done, as he's still his usual self but just got a wonky cheek?! He hates going the vets!
