  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit insurance?

I pay £8 per month per rabbit with PetPlan. It includes everything except dental work (I think) and there's a £50 excess. I personally think it's worth it as long as you don't have STACKS of bunnies, then it's probably worth having a savings account instead!

Depends on so many things...what the excess is, what is/isn't covered (e.g. dental problems), whether cover for illnesses is for life if the policy is renewed, or whether any illness is only covered for the first 12 months, also where you live, as veterinary costs vary a lot across the country. Who is the policy with? On face value it doesn't sound bad - I was quoted £9 a month and a £60 excess for each of my buns with petplan

the exsess is £20 and it does include dental care im sure... also injections free after 6 months.

Cripes that sounds like a good policy - who's it with?

You also want to check that they pay out PER YEAR and not per condition.

They said it was a total pay out of £3000 but they said it would be hard to run up a bill that high!

Its with a local vets.

I may have to ask around and see if I can get a better deal - mine's £2500 every year but you're right, I can't really see how one rabbit could run up £3000 even for a lifelong condition... :?

I'm sure it's possible - Mary's probably coming up for around £600-700 by now I think and he's only 3, if his dental problems hadn't of eased off like they have, and his kidney-related problems been more serious (but not serious enough to have him PTS) then I'm sure it would quite easily rack up the pennies!
There's also the giant breeds that get joint problems and that - x-rays and surgery, glucosamine, etc. would probably cost quite a lot.
