  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

ok , cheeky had his dental done on friday , got him home friday night. he,s eating ok despite his mouth obviously being a bit sore with getting a tooth out but over the last two days i have noticed that he is drinking an awful lot of water . he is fine otherwise ( considering what he has gone through) I thought it could be due to the fact that it cools his mouth ??? or could it be his kidneys ?

Is it hot up there Gina? It's been boiling down here and all the buns ahve been drinking loads! It could also be that it cools his mouth but if it continues i would have the vet take a look XXXXX

yeah it has been quite warm but his wee chin feels red hot so i,m assuming that his mouth must be inflamed so it must be cooling it . if he is still drinking alot tomorrow - i,ll give the vet a phone , otherwise tho , he,s great . :D

he fine , still drinking but not as much as yesterday . I came in from work and noticed that he had not eaten , i flew into a panic but realised why when I picked him up . His chin was looking abit sore this morning so i put some tea tree cream for rabbits on his chin area . what had happened tho was it had dried during the day and did not stay oily , it had actually hardened like a face pack would so he did not want to open his mouth .. poor babe , i feel so terrible , i washed it off and applied a little vaseline ( which stays moist) and he was alot happier with me and went right to his food . bad mummy

Have you changed is diet? They drink alot more when eating dry stuff than when they're eating wet stuff. If you've been feeding him sloopy food he'll drink less then when he's eating pellets again drink more :)

cheeky has been on a softish diet now for nearly a year due to having virtually no teeth , his diet is still the same but i spoke with the vet today and he said that its probably due to the heat , the dental extraction and the fact that its cooling his mouth down . The vet done a blood test on friday before his wee op and it came back fine so he said not to panic . i feel utterly terrible about the cream on his chin tho . it was set like concrete !! , i,ll NEVER do that again .

i meant to also say that i,ve been softening his excel for a while now with warm water as advised by the vet . he has ate loads of this over the last two days so i suppose that could also be making him thirsty .
