  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

We now know what is wrong with Moo!

Hiya!

Would just like to say thanks for all your ideas and help. I ended up going to a small animal specialist and straight away he diagnosed Moo with gangreen. Poor bun. Cant believe other vets missed this, do not want to pay them any more money for completely misdiagnosing Moo and making him have general anaesthetic when he didnt need it! Can you complain about this sort of thing as I recon nearly £200 is a lot to pay when they dont even know what is wrong!!
Moo however is so happy he even licked the vet! At the worst he will loose the end of his toes but at least we now know what he has..how he got it - who knows!!

Oh bless him, poor Moo :( at least he can receive the proper treatment now you have a correct diagnosis.
Please let us know how Moo progresses, and we send you our very best wishes, and GOOD LUCK wishes for Moos speedy recovery :)

Thanks! Exactly what I thought too. However, there is nothing that can be done, we either have to wait for him to get better or for him to loose tips of toes, feel so sorry for him - he really doesnt deserve this! I would love to get him another bun to have for company to cheer him up but not sure if now is the time!
:)

Sending Little Moo good wishes - I've never heard of Gangreen in bunnies so thats something else I've learned from here.

As Adele says at least you managed to get good advice from a specialist for this litte Bunny.

Keep us posted re her progress bless her.

:( sorry to hear about Mr Moo bun :( I too have never heard of gangreen , especially in bunnies  perhaps it is very rare hence your previous vet not recognising it :? So glad that he has now been diagnosed correctly and is on the road to recovery :D The worry must of been terrible for you :( :( Did your new vet say how long it would take Moo to fully recover :?: keep us posted Lorrymasters  :)

Oh poor little Moo. One thing that puzzles me, I had to deal with a passenger on a flight who had gangrene and his blood was bottle green  as its spreads round the body. So what I'm not understanding is why aren't they operating on the bit that they know is gangrenous (sp) before it spreads?

Moo and gangrene

The new vet said it is down to a bacteria called Ergot, this resides in some types of corn which are in feed. He asked if I had changed his feed and I had - to a local one! So have put him straight back on Russell rabbit and thrown the other stuff out and already he seems more perky! I think its quite rare but this guy knew his stuff - luckily! He said it wont spread and worst case scenerio he will loose the end of his toes but he doesnt want to operate as Moo might be not loose them! At the moment it just looks like a scab but if it gets horrible at all I have to take him to the vets to have them bandaged.
