Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. bunny is still sneezing!!!

hi

my 4yr old bun still keeps sneezing. he has been to the vets twice!! he had a course of baytril which did nothing and his just come off a higher dosage of anti-biotics (he was on a course of tablets) and he is still sneezing and has a white snotty discharge.

does any one know what could be wrong with him??

Sounds like your bunny could have a pasturella infection, classic symptoms sneezing and a white discharge from the nose, I would take him back to the vets in the morning.

hi,
yes it sound like snuffles (pasturella) and is contageus so if he is around other buns i would keep him away as other could very well get it too, as that is always adviced, but i would go the the vets

Sounds like pasturella (snuffles) Sooty has it and is on his 2nd antibio course. The discharge has cleared and the sneezing has lessened. Back to the vet Thurs. Lynda said there are different types. Can he get tested and medicated for a particular strain? (It is catching too)

hi

Yes there are different types of bacteria involved in 'snuffles' - the vet needs to take a swab of the snot and send it for a 'culture and sensitivity test' to find out which antibiotic will be most effective - a lot of vets don't realise this if they have limited experience with rabbits.

Here's a good article:

I had exactly the same problem with Fern, she ended up on Baytril for several months, bunnies can take longer to react to antibiotics but not that long! So my vet did the swab up the nose thing and got it cultured. Turned out to be Strep (ie what causes tonsilitus in humans) so Fern ended up on a different antibiotic (the banana flavoured medicine we had as children - Boots even ordered it in specially for me so it cost less :D ). Sorted her out a treat. I think by the time we sorted it out fern had been sneezing almost constantly for a year, so don't worry too much, it might take time to get it sorted but your bun should be fine.

Who did the test and was it difficult? What does it cost? Sooty now on prolonged antibio use for next few weeks

Often a culture and sensitivity is no use once antibiotic treatment has started as they strains will have changed and been affected by the antibiotic. Obviously if the strain is resistant to the antibiotic you are using a later culture will show the strain but the sensitivity results will be affected by the prior treatments.

If the infection is very deep then Baytril really is no use (although it is worth trying it first as it is the most bunny-safe). My vet recommends Septrin first (banana flavoured one ;) ) and penicillin injections as a last resort.

I took her to Chris Hall over in Richmond, my normal vet had recommended him as Fern also had teeth problems which my normal vet wanted me to get specialist help with, so we were already seeing Chris for her teeth so he did it.

It was basically shove a swab/loop up her nose and scrape the stuff onto an agar plate to send away. I got the results back in 5 days, and then they sent me the first lot of stuff but it was only a weeks worth and it wasn't totally cleared up so I got a private prescription to get some from Boots.

Don't be shocked at the price but it probably cost me over £150 but thats cos Chris is a specialist and is expensive - well, you're paying for his extremely extensive knowledge and experience. When I've had stuff like that done at my normal vet its about £50 - 60 for most things sent to the lab.

OK thanks for your help. I will contact my vet and explain the different procedures. He says himself he isnt a rabbit expert
