  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Anaemia?

Does anyone have experience of anaemia in rabbits at all? One of mine suffers but we don’t know why. Bloods, scans, xrays etc have come back twice as ‘unremarkable’, though he is dropping weight. He seems to stabilise after antibiotics but other than plenty of iron rich veg, is there anything I can do to prevent this keep happening?

Is it regenerative or non regenerative anaemia ?

Not sure that I understand the difference. If it’s regenerative, how would you ever know that you were anaemic in the first place? By regular fluctuating bloods? I’m going to guess that it is non regenerative, as he requires treatment to ‘right’ him each time. Or does non regenerative mean that even despite treatment he would be permanently anaemic?

Causes of regenerative anaemia can include blood loss from wounds, bladder infection causing haematuria (blood loss in urine), internal organ damage (liver/spleen). Rabbits who may ingest lead via nibbling painted surfaces (old paints often contained lead) can also exhibit symptoms of regenerative anaemia

Non regenerative anaemia is usually associated with chronic disease such as Dental disease, kidney disease, sore hocks, some cancers, chronic ear infections etc.,
