  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbit with White Spot in his Eye

tonibun

Wise Old Thumper
A lady on UK Rabbits has just taken her bunny to the Vets because he has developed a white spot in his eye. The Vet said he has EC and has told her he will need to have his eye removed but is worried about doing a GA. Is this normal for this to happen. She is so upset.

Sounds as though the Vet has diagnosed EC induced Phacoclastic Uveitis

I have had a couple of Rabbits with this condition, one Rabbit had to have the eye removed, one Rabbit's condition was controlled with medication. See details on here

Treatment

For uveitis associated with Encephalitozoon cuniculi:

Albendazole or Fenbendazole to treat the parasitic infection. (B600.11.w11, B601.12.w12, J541.7.w1)
Combined topical and systemic Dexamethasone and Oxytetracycline has been used. (B600.11.w11)
Lens extraction. (B600.11.w11, J29.16.w2), ideally using phacoemulsification (B600.11.w11, B601.12.w12, J541.7.w1)
Enucleation. (B600.11.w11, J29.16.w2, J26.29.w1)
Example case: the lens and associated granuloma were removed by phacoemulsification. Recurrent granuloma in the anterior chamber was treated successfully with albendazole orally (30 mg/kg daily for four weeks, then 15 mg/kg daily for four weeks) plus topical 1% prednisolone (every six hours for four weeks then every 12 hours for four weeks)
