  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Eye absess

Hello everyone, I am new to this site. I have a bunny "Cotten" who I believe has an absess behind his eye. He has a history of dental problems as well. Unfortunately we live in a remote area in Costa Rica and have no exotic vets. I took him yesterday to a local vet that pescribed oral "Clavamox". I gave him one dose last night and then this morning I started reading about the medication . I will not give him it anymore. I had asked the vet about penicillin and he told me to give the clavamox instead.

After reading about absesses I see that penicillin is recommended for treating them.... The only penicillin I am able to get here is penicillin dihydrostreptomycin 20/25 ... does anyone here know if I can use this on rabbits?? If so what does would you recommend? Thank you in advance.

Hello

Unfortunately none of us on here are qualified to give you advice re the dose of prescription medication

Penicillin can only be given to Rabbits by INJECTION. It can cause fatal enterotoxaemia if given orally.

Whilst we cannot advise you re dose rates there is information on the subject in the public domain

I've had two rabbits with abscesses behind the eye, one sadly passed away through a vets error, the other is happy and healthy at the moment. She has had surgery 3 times for the abscess alongside various antibiotics given safely, some antibiotics should never be given to rabbits in any form and others such as penicillin injection only. As above only a vet can prescribe and treat although I've spent some time in Costa Rica (amazing country) I understand it's difficult but a vet is a must for any pet
