  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Snuffles Protocol

My 10 year old bunny went to the vet last week as he sneezed white mucus on me (and has had leaky eyes but everything was fine with them on x-rays and a CT scan earlier in 2023 so has had the tear ducts flushed since). His usual vet (rabbit specialist) wasn't in, so he will see her later this week. He had a sample taken and started on Karidox (Doxycyline) twice a day for 10 days and Bisolven twice a day for 7 days. Haven't had the sample results back yet. The vet he saw is treating for Pasteurella. He's already on Metacam and Paracetemol suspension for arthritis, as it was on those already the vet didn't up the dosage. He also has significant heart calcification, kidney disease which has been well managed for 3 years and also has his ears flushed every 1-4 weeks.

He's breathing fine and the vet didn't think it had gone to his lungs, but I've had no experience with snuffles and feel like I don't know what I'm doing other than the meds. Can people with experience with bunnies with snuffles tell me what they are doing in terms of a daily/weekly protocol please? How you are cleaning eyes (& how often)? What about cleaning the nose (he's sneezed white mucus twice this weekend and had it on his nostrils)? Any herbs/forage etc that is beneficial to eat etc? Anything I can do to assist?

He's got through so much, I really don't want to lose him to this and am nervous that he had to see another vet, so want to learn everything I can do to help, grateful for any help you can give please.

Sending vibes. I had a bunny with chronic snuffles who lived half of his long life with the condition. Identifying the pathogen and correct abx is a great step to get it under control.
