Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Very worried - due to travel Wednesday bunny in vets now overnight

My 3 year old bunny became unwell Wednesday urine looked like milk and by Thursday no poop. Vet prescribed metacam and emerprid . Bunny not eating Thursday and I fed critical care through the night and early Friday did a few poops. I have been feeding critical care by syringe and yesterday he ate lots of greens and not sure if related had really bad diarrhoea for about four hours. He has been back to vets today for administered medication and they are keeping him overnight. Update this evening , he is weeing, not eating apart from syringe critical care but bit brighter. I'm due to go away for a week Wednesday do you think he should go to the bunny boarder or ask the vet about keeping him. Thank you

I'd play it by ear and see what the vets thinks on Tuesday.
Worth discussing with your boarder too if they'd be comfortable and able to continue any medications etc.

I would not be happy to leave a rabbit at a boarder under these circumstances. In my experience, it usually takes the best part of two weeks to recover from a bout of stasis. At the moment, he is needing a lot of hands-on specialist care - more than I would expect a boarding establishment to be able to provide. Even if he seems to be eating / weeing / pooing normally by Tues, the change of environment at the boarder could trigger another episode - which would put him back with the vet - and it sounds like you don't really know what triggered it this time (that's bunnies for you). I would also expect the boarder to suggest that he shouldn't be with them - for his own wellbeing, and potentially for the health of the others in their care.

I would be much happier if my rabbit was either with me on familiar territory, or receiving 24 hour attention at the vet where he can be stabilised and further examinations carried out if necessary. For me, the risks of leaving a very poorly bunny with the extra stress of an unfamiliar environment would not be appropriate. Is your vet able to look after him while you are away? Or would one of the nurses be willing to look after him for you?

Welcome to the Forum

Sorry to hear about your bunny.

It sounds like it may be an episode of stasis brought about by a urinary infection.

I tend to agree with DP, and see how things are by Tuesday. It also depends on your boarding facility. I board rabbits and would have no hesitation with nursing a rabbit around the clock, and have done so very many times.

Your rabbit may well be better by Tuesday, especially given the care you and your vet are giving her. I would definitely ring your boarder and explain the situation though and see whether they would be happy to take your rabbit in those circumstances for you.

Info on stasis in case you need it:

Good luck xx

I agree, OP I think that your Rabbit may need ongoing Nursing Care and I would prefer for this to be done in a Veterinary establishment where there are Veterinarians/Veterinary Nurses on site 24/7. Did the Vet you saw initially rule out 'Bladder Sludge' as being the primary cause of pain leading to secondary anorexia/gut stasis ? I ask as you mentioned that your Rabbit was passing 'milky urine'.
Bladder sludge is caused by a build up of calcium deposits which can form a thick 'sludge' within the bladder. This can cause inflammation of the bladder wall and possibly bacterial infection. Obviously this would cause pain/cystitis. A Rabbit in pain, for what ever reason, will stop eating. An anorexic Rabbit will then develop gut stasis. Obviously treating the gut stasis is essential, but it is also necessary to try to identify and treat the underlying cause .

A bit more info here :
