  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

head tilt

Hi there. My rabbit is 6 yrs old . He seems to have a little bit of head tilt and a bit of back leg problems .He can walk fast but he loses his balance and falls over. He is eating, drinking, pooping fine. He is trying to play but seems confused. Took him to the vet he said his teeth, ears and eyes look fine. I think he may have had a little stroke cause he likes to run really fast and stop himself with the wall. He seems happy . I wanted to know if you think he is in pain or what I should do. i read he should go back to normal in a few wks/months but just feel bad for the lil guy.

The two main causes of head tilt are EC and ear infection. Inner ear infections are quite hard to diagnose with an xray or ct scan so it's always a good idea to treat for both.

Did your vet give you any medication at all?

He needs treatment. If it's E.C the parasite will cause damage to his kidneys if left untreated and if it's an ear infection, he needs antibiotics.

I suggest finding a vet that actually knows rabbits. Post up in rabbit chat asking for a rabbit savvy vet in your area.

The longer he goes without treatment the less likely he is to recover.

Having just lost my Betty within 3 weeks of becoming ill to E. cuniculi I can only echo what the others have said. It's a horrible disease and I can't believe a vet wouldn't treat and/or do further investigations - they obviously aren't rabbit savvy at all. He isn't likely to recover from this on his own and could get a lot worse very quickly whereas an experienced rabbit vet could really help him. Hope you can find someone to help him, poor thing :(

How has he been today? As mentioned he will most likely need treatment.

We lost a bun a couple of months ago with a head tilt and are currently nursing another who is seriously ill. Both had/are having, intensive treatment.

Good luck x
