Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Losing fur/scabs?

I'm a little concerned about my rabbit, Petra. I've been away for the past few days camping and when I returned, I found Petra with quite a bit of fur loss on her back, looking like this.

She's still acting like her usual self, but I did take a closer look and found these small little scabby/crusty sores.

I'm thinking she's gotten in a squabble with one of the others, but none of the others have so much as a scratch on them. My mother who was looking after them said Petra had looked fine the day before I returned and didn't see any fights, but who knows... My next thought is that it's some kind of mites, but I can't find any on her. My real question is what should I do about the little sores? She doesn't seem in too much discomfort when I touch them, she doesn't flinch or anything. Because they're so small should I just leave them for a few days and see if they heal on their own? Should I take her to the vet?

I apologise if the photos are a little hard to see.

The marks look like bites from an insect/mite, it is not always possible to see parasites on a Rabbit with the naked eye. Personally I would want a Vet to take a look to try to establish a definitive diagnosis and to obtain any treatment deemed to be necessary ?

Do you keep Chickens or other fowl anywhere near your Rabbits ?

Thankyou for your reply. I don't keep chickens or anything near them, but I will start looking into a trip to the vet.

These actually look something like flea bites to me, but I don't know whether you have them in your neck of the woods?

We do get fleas here. We did wonder if they were flea bites...
