  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Whats the best age to get does spayed?

Young Bun
I have 2 gorgeous sisters which I want to get spayed as soon as I can. However, I have had different advice from 2 different vets. I thought you could get does spayed from 4 months onwards, but I have been told by one vets that they do spay does until at least 6 months old. The second vets I called said 5 months. My bunnies are just under 4 months at the moment. They get along so well together at the moment and I don't want to risk putting off spaying them and them turning into hormonal teenagers and fighting. Please help!!! Whats the best thing to do???

You can indeed have does spayed from four months onwards. See here from the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund:

I think you'll have to assess how many spays the vets have done and how confident they are with rabbit surgery - in short, how rabbit savvy they are. You obviously can't take risks with any rabbit surgery and an inexperienced vet.

The weight of the females is also an important factor the vet should take into consideration, so after a full health check they should decide if/when they will be ready for the op.

I hope this helps you a bit!

Different vets will have varying opinions on when to spay. MightyMax is right - weight is defo important especially with tiny breeds like netherland dwarves.
I agree - find a vet who is confident in rabbit surgery.

Personally I would not want to spay a Doe until 5 months of age at the earliest. I'd also want to make sure that the Vet carrying out the procedure was very 'Rabbit Savvy'. This link may help you to identify a Rabbit Savvy

Rabbit Residence generally spays from 5 months onwards, sometimes a little longer for very large breeds as they mature slower.

thanks everyone for the advice. My babies are mini lops so maybe worth waiting till 5 months old, but I will check out the sites you have listed above. I knew I could depend on you all for advice.

Yes, one of the Rescues I worked at spayed the females at 4 months. If their weight is good and they are in fine health, there's no problem :D
