  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

URGENT ADVICE PLEASE rabbit passing mucus only and extremely anorexic

Young Bun
Urgent advice please. My old Dutch bunny has only passed mucus today. She is eating and drinking and alert but has lost weight recently. I took her to the vet last week and teeth are fine. I have emergency vet appointment booked for 5pm today but it's not my normal vet and wonder if anyone could advise as to what it might be and the treatment they should be offering her? Last time I saw an emergency vet they got it badly wrong and don't trust them. I'll be requesting an urgent appointmrt with my regular vet tomorrow morning. Thanks in advance x

You say she is eating and drinking, but in the thread title you say she is 'extremely Anorexic' Anorexic means 'not eating'. Are you meaning that she is eating but very thin ?

There are numerous possibilities as to what may be wrong. An abdominal examination may elicit some information such as an enlarged liver or some sort of abnormal mass. Blood tests would be needed to assess major organ function.

Is your Doe spayed ?

I do understand you not trusting the emergency vet. But I hope today you get some reassurance.

Your good vet tomorrow seems a better bet. If she is eating and drinking that's a good sign. Mucous is usually a symptom of an inflamed gut.
