Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. First dental - a few questions U/D she's home !

My little Treacle has to go for a dental tomorrow, her first one :( I'd noticed that she wasn't eating the stalky hay, just the soft stuff, or eating all her nuggets., she's fine with grass and herbs, and pooping ok. I popped her to the vets on Saturday, and she was so good, letting them look in her mouth. So she has some spurs, which are probably giving her a sore mouth, bless. They gave her a painkilling injection, which seemed to perk her up yesterday.
So just wondering, is it painful for them after a dental, do they need painkillers, should she get back to normal eating fairly quick ? Just need to be prepared.
Am very nervous for her, so any spare vibes for my girlie would be appreciated.
Thanks

They should give you pain medication and other meds to take home.. If they dont, make sure you ask for it!!

All the very best.....

After Fergs he gets sent home with 3 days of pain relief and usually a few days of gut stimulants too. He is usually eating and nearly back to normal within a day or 2, he usually starts eating almost straight away :)

As long as you get some pain relief for afterwards I am sure it will go well and she'll be back to normal very soon! Good luck! X

Agree with pain relief - Alf's dose is upped for three - five days depending on what the dental was like. He was acting 'drunk' when I got him home, so be prepared for some wobbliness, although it depends on how long after the dental you pick him up; I picked Alf up only a few hours later. He had a nibble of a few strands of hay, but other than that didn't eat until next day. You may have to give her a syringe feed!

That's very similar to the experience I had with Scrappy after her first dental. She was very groggy the first night and I found she struggled with pellets the next morning and only really nibbled on some leafy greens. She had the dental on a Monday afternoon and wasn't eating normally again until the Wednesday evening. I wonder if it's worth getting some mushy food (perhaps to mix with CC or ground pellets) for Treacle to lick up for the first couple of days in case she finds chewing a bit difficult at first. I plan to do that if (probably when!) Scrappy next needs a dental.

Sending Treacle lots of vibes for tomorrow  xx

Thanks everyone, really appreciate your advice, I will defiantly make sure that she has pain relief to bring home.

Sometimes their jaw can be a little painful afterwards, just from being open whilst the dental is being performed. So definitely pain relief for a couple of days or so afterwards, but you've got that covered. :thumb: My late bunny Herbie was a dental regular and he used to be eating as soon as he woke up, but I've had others who have taken a couple of days to bounce back completely.

My Roo is in for a dental too tomorrow, he has them every 5-6 months. He sends lots of love to Treacle and says don't worry, it'll all be OK and it is sooooo much nicer afterwards when you've not got those nasty spikes poking you. xx

Thanks Tracey, I feel more prepared now, so hopefully won't worry so much.
Treacle says "thank you Roo, hope your teeths feel better after tomorrow, I will be thinking of you xxx"

Treacles home after her first dental, all went ok thank goodness. The spurs were predominantly on the one side, so very likey going to need this done again, as it shows she tends to eat on the other side :( her tongue was sore, which I suspected, so had painkiller, antibiotic, and a gut stimulant.
Total cost was £72, which I was pleasantly surprised at, does this sound ok ? would be interested what others pay.

Glad it went ok :thumb: £72?! That sounds very reasonable to me! I pay £120  thankfully he isn't regular. He costs us enough as it is!

glad it went well yes £72 sounds reasonable, I have paid from about £74-£120, last time £330 or there abouts as saw specialists and had x-rays etc, normally insurance doesn't coverdentals but they did for specialists one, which was a relief
