Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Need advice for a friend's bunny :(

A friend just sent me this message, along with a photo of a very sad looking bunny. She said she's taking him to the vet first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime does anyone have any ideas about what the problem could be?

Hey Chloe I have a bunny question for you. My rabbit Reggie has recently dropped a LOT of weight in the last week. He is visibly emaciated, and acting very lethargic and poorly. I am getting him in to the vet first thing in the morning, as the rabbit vet is not available today. He is eating and drinking normally, but losing weight. His teeth are fine too. The only thing that has changed recently is that he was neutered exactly a month ago. His incision has healed wonderfully and there were no problems during the surgery.

Thanks in advance :)

Unexplained weightloss can be due to many different issues, from the relatively minor to the very serious. How old is the Rabbit ? Does he live alone ? Is he drinking more than normal ? Does the owner actually watch him eat- a Rabbit can appear to be eating OK but on closer observation it can become obvious that they take ages to chew one mouthful due to a Dental problem.

She said she has observed him eating and drinking and all seems normal. I think he's a fairly young bunny and yes he's currently a single bunny. I was hoping you would reply Jane! :)

Same happened to my Skye, has your friend got insurance? As all the diagnostics and treatment forSkye cost nearly £2k

This is why I'm so glad I got four of mine insured the other day! She def doesn't have insurance :( I know she'd pay whatever she had to though, she's devoted to her pets. I'll tell her about Skye.

I'm sure you probably know from my thread, but she had a severe inner ear infection and also a dodgy liver (although it was the ear infection causing the main weight loss).

It might be as simple as dental related, but in my limited experience weight loss is a complex issue! (Still something up as her weight gain has plateaued but can't find out what)

my rabbits have always carried on eating despite when needing dental, so defo tell her vet to check the molar teeth

did you find out what diet he is currently on? is he moulting?

He may simply be moulting and not liking the change of weather. So long as still eating and making motions should be ok
