  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

licking off ivermectin

2 weeks ago I treated all 3 rabbits with Ivermectin (anti-parsite spot on by baephar) and none of them seemed bothered by it, and didn't notice them washing it off. Now I've just re-treated Bugsy and given Bramble her first treatment, and both of them seemed to have got their heads 360 like an owl and washed it off from between their shoulder blades

I am guessing it is not toxic if licked off as I believe it can be given in water for internal parasites, but as I'm treating for fur mite, would the treatment be less effective now it's washed off?

I've also treated Poppy a second time and fortunately she hasn't licked it as much as the other two. I'm guessing if I put it above their tails, they would still be able to lick it off

I don't know about any additional additives in the spot on treatment, but ivermectin itself can be given orally, and is still effective with good tissue distribution.

Try doing it at meal time when there is exciting food on offer to distract them :)

Good idea! Thannks, I only have one bun left to do, then I'll have to do it again in 2 weeks. So I'll try the food distraction...but they only have a few pellets & a couple of fenugreek crunchies and they go really quick  I guess I could also do it the same time as i top up the hay..they always go mad at hay time.
