  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Tooth Root, Jaw Bone, Sneezing and watery eye :(

I've posted on here before and not really sure on what's best anymore. Our vet isn't savvy but has had conversations with a savvy vet for best treatment. Boris our 6 year old has had problems for a year now. He started with abscess which revealed jaw bone infection and tooth root infection in a lower molar. He's had his molar filled about August last year. He's forever sneezing and now his eye is watering. These are more than likely going to be the dental issues. He seems happy still, chasing for veg and pellets. He's at the vet tomorrow for a check on his teeth n eye. I really don't think they know what to do. He's was on depocillin every 2 day untill 4 month ago which he's gone for every 3 days to every 4. They can't pull his tooth as his jaw is so deformed :( last time we questioned the sneezing it was said it can't be dental as that's his bottom molar?

Has he had recent skull xrays as the top could also be involved now?

Regular burring back to gum level can reduce pressure on the affected roots.

Good luck

Could you try to get to a rabbit specialist? There are probably 2 or 3 in reasonable travelling distance if you are mobile - Francis Harcourt-Brown in Harrogate, Molly Varga at Holmes Chapel, Cheshire and David Crossley who does clinics at Manchester and Doncaster. All have details on the web. I have been to FHB a few times. Prices are very similar to my regular vet but you can ask for quotes up front for a referral and recommended work.

I suspect another x-ray may be useful. If there are lower jaw problems, the upper teeth may not be wearing down properly so may cause additional problems, but may be perfectly manageable (eg by regular burring down). There could also be an infection needing different antibiotics.

I had a dental bunny on daily metacam and depocillin twice a week for about 18 months. He had lower jaw problems which didn't bother him. He just had regular dentals to even out his teeth when his weight started to go down (ie he showed us that he was having problems eating).

I hope all goes well tomorrow.

I would echo this - with complex dental issues a rabbit savvy vet is essential and can quite literally save a bunnies life and also reduce the number of times he needs to be seen by good dental work and well chosen diagnositics and meds..

Thank you for the advise. He doesn't travel well and FHB is about hour away. He's a very scared boy when out of his norm. Usually end up syringe feeding him after :( ... We was going to ask for another x ray when he next went for his teeth burring. Maybe a good idea to do one now and see if it's worse and maybe get him transferred. He amazes me how he's still a happy bun. Our previous vet wanted to pts this time last year. I'm also going in 9 week. I'm gonna be a wreck leaving him x
