Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing

Hi, please help, Boris is sneezing loads and has for a month or so. Thought it might be dust but we have tried lots of different hay and its still bad at times.. He sometimes has clear discharge coming out and his paws are manky. He's on depocillin for a tooth root infection (can't have it removed due to jaw shattering). He's on 2ml every other day and has been for 6 month. Any ideas? He's fine other than the sneezes :-(

Do you use sawdust or anything else that may have a lot of dust in it?

Have you tried dust free hay? They have a website www.dustfreehay.co.uk/

Or is there anything you can think of that you may have changed lately in his diet?

Another thing is some bunnies do suffer with allergies so it might be an idea to take him to your vet to check him over, they should be able to tell you what it is that's causing the sneezing :)

The vet has obviously seen him, due to his tooth root problem. What did he say about the sneezing?

Our previous vet said it was hay. We have since tried different ones and its still happening. Hes such a big hay muncher. Sticks hus nose right and eats every bit. He's a house bun and we use shredded card In litter tray. Hes due at our new vets next week so I'll ask. They eat a bin bag full every week of hay I'm going to struggle if I have to buy special hay for him. Knowing it isn't serious is my main concern x

Yes, mine are huge hay eaters - but that is all to the good! ;)

Is your new vet a rabbit specialist?

No she's not but she is willing to speak to a specialist vet which she has done with his teeth problems. This recent lot we are trying he absolutely loves. Every strand goes. He'll be grumpy if we have to swap again lol x

you arnt using any air fresheners around him just on the off chance or anything with perfume in ? as this can cause sneezing in fur babies .

I suspect the problem may be related to elongated tooth roots. As your Rabbit already has a tooth root abscess it may be that other tooth roots have started to penetrate the nasal passages causing lots of inflammation and making him sneeze.

Has he had skull radiographs taken ?

Is he on a non steroidal anti inflammatory such as Metacam aswell as the Depocillin ?

He had xray In Jan and spurs filed 2 month ago. They are hoping his tooth get lose enough to pull eventually. Im scared they want to take him off his jabs. Should I suggest he stays on them? He's not on anything else bar the depocillin. I do have metacam here as he didn't need it after his spurs x

Fingers crossed, we have took our plug in out and not heard him sneeze for few days. Could this be the reason, I hope so. At vets this week so least he can get checked over x

Yey that sounds positive :D
I know it's not the same but my brother can't be around those plug-in air fresheners because he can't stop sneezing, so hopefully it's the same thing for your bunny and you've found and sorted the problem out :thumb:

Keep us updated on how he gets on :) xx
