  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Can i give antibiotics and pain killers together in food or does it have to b given seperate in food or does it have to be given straight to mouth???

I always give medication by mouth so that I know the whole dose has gone in.

If the pain relief is Metacam, then it needs to be given with or straight after food. I normally syringe a bit of recovery food in first and then give the Metacam, unless I know that they have just eaten in which case I just give the metacam.

Arrr i just put it on his food i think he ate the pain stuff but wouldnt eat anymore once id put the baytril on! Ive squeezed a couple if grapes juice over the pellets, didnt have any banana. Ive left him in the hope that he will eat it, ill try again giving it orally tomorrow, hes just so wriggly and i cant find his mouth ha!

according to my bunnies, metacam is yummy...baytril is most certainly not! i managed to get it into mufasa by hiding it between mint and basil leaves, on fenugreek crunchies, slices of carrot etc (tiny bit on each!) he would also take a small amount mixed in the syringe with ella's kitchen fruit puree. it was a slow and painful process! he did take the metacam straight from the syringe though :)

Don't worry i give doughnut her three medicines all together on a bit of weetabix. Metacam is one of them. It is less stressful for both of us and the nurses at the hospital did the same since she's a pickle about being picked us. It soaks everything up and you don't want a stressed bunny.
