Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Moving to Serbia with the warren - need transport advice!

In April I will be moving to Serbia for a new job, and I am of course taking the buns with me, but a bit unsure of what is the best mode of transport for the bunnies

The alternatives are:

1. Have a pet relocation specialist take care of all arrangements, and they would go by car and then by plane, and I would not be able to be with them - I am very reluctant to hand over my furballs to strangers, and I have a feeling plane travel won't agree with the buns, particularly as they'll be in the cargo-hold (temperature- and pressure-regulated of course). This would take half a day.

2. Do the whole journey with the buns by train - this would likely take two days, and I would rent a whole compartment, and give them turns to run freely.

3. Do the whole journey by car - this would likely take two days, but with quality of the roads being what they are here, I think this would really stress the little ones out, and also frequent stops need to be made for eating, drinking and exercise.

Basically the choice is between a short, high-stress trip (option 1), a long, medium-stress trip (2) or a long, high-stress trip (3).

What would you recommend? If there are other options, please let me know, but unfortunately, I can't hop with them all the way to Serbia :D

I personally like the train idea if you could rent a private compartment. That way you would be with them so a whole lot less stress for them and freedom to exercise. You also will beable to tell how they were handling the trip as you know them best.

I don't have any experience of transporting rabbits on journeys any longer than about 45 mins (and mine have always been good travellers at that). But I wonder if option 2 would really be worth the potential hassle from the train company if letting the buns out? Wouldn't want to risk being asked to leave the train at some unknown station with pets in tow.

That won't happen - I will speak to them in advance and bribe the train manager (welcome to Ukraine  ), and I would also put plastic and blankets all over the floor and seats - I wouldn't risk the buns walking around on those surfaces anyway :)

I would go for the train! Any kind of car journey is stressful, but trains at least go straight and don't do a lot of accelerating/decelerating. The buns will have you and can have a run around. I wouldn't go for the car/plane etc as it's a lot of changes and the jury is still out on whether bunnies get pressure changes in their ears causing pain (like some humans do). Plus it's very loud and strange angles and noises, not to mention lots of other humans and weird smells and weird temperatures!

Train definitely seems like the best option, imo :thumb: How will you go to the loo and shower? Can you lock the train compartment or leave them with someone that you're travelling with?

The train sounds like the only way to go. I would never allow a bunny of mine to go in the cargo hold on a plane. They could stress out way to much.

Train sounds best (I know about bribing train managers - we travelled in Romania and Bulgaria a few years ago - with bikes not buns - and had to do the same!!)

The train seems to me the better one as well - there are a few practical issues to consider such as the above, but overall, I think it would be better for the buns, and probably for me also - it just hope that the buns will be allowed to travel through Hungary without a quarantine, but I need to check this...

Another vote for train. I hope they don't need quarantine though.

Is this of any use?

(not sure if travelling through rules are different to immigration)

Perhaps you will be able to get spays in Serbia!!!

Yes, I did some preliminary checks, and so far it's looking good for rabbit-savvy vets, but need to speak to them in person.

Also, I'll be able to get a flat with a huge bunny room (something like 25- 30 square feet for each bun), so I can have them all three living together in the same room, but of course separate from each other until they get to know each other better - this means they will be able to interact and get to know each other all day and night :D

Oh I'm pleased for the buns!

How about you? Is it good for you to be moving to Serbia?

Yes, it's a very good opportunity :D

Also I'm starting to get a bit fed up of living in the middle of nowhere where everything is a hassle so moving a bit closer to civilization would be good - and being able to give the bunnies better healthcare and better living arrangements definitely helps - I am still trying to work out where to put Binky on Tuesday :)

 - can't wait to see pics of Binky!

Here is a little teaser -taken after I at got her put into a cage in which she can at least move, but still not adequate for a bun:
