  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

should rabbits be wormed routinely?

A vet told me that they used to worm rabbits routinely however they do not now as it can cause a lot of problems for rabbits, should rabbits be wormed routinely or not?

There is a lt of debate around this subject, we used to worm Jimby for 9 consecutive days every 3-4 months but were told that the 9 days is not really worth doing as you can not effectivly prevent worms in rabbits, so best to treat rather than prevent, so we are now planning on treating them for 28 consecutive days twice a year.

 i find alot of these things confusing too:shock:
you try to do whats best but there is sooo many conflicting views..
we never thought that we should worm until harry became ill but now we think we should..i think that sometimes animals and people take too many supplements and preventative things and dont let our bodies do what they should be doing.ie we are all made to fight most things and so long as we eat right and look after ourselves properly we should be able to fight it naturally..
bunnies included.thats not to say we shouldnt myxi and vhd by the way:oops:

my vet tells me to do it for 9 days every time they have there mxyi jab thats when there immunity most needs it when they are stressed, they go back in october ill ask her about it :D

I would only panacur for the 9 days worming if my buns had been somewhere that other animals had been.

As for panacuring for EC - I would now only use a 28 day course if there was an active infection. From what I understand from the recent talks at the RWAF conference there is little point in doing otherwise.

my vet advises every 6 months for 4 weeks. she said shes seen too many cases of active EC and she believes panacur does help to keep it at bay.

My vet says unless theres signs of E.C or a positive test for this parasite, then not to bother.

Charlie and grace have a 9 day course on our vets advice and will be done 4 times a year as she suggests. xx

none of my vets even once rcommended worming in all the time I had G&T nor did we ever get told to worm any of the other buns I had. However, the Wood green care sheet recommends regular worming. I must remember to ask Stephan when I update him on Sprocket.:?

thank you :) i didnt know it could cause issues mine don't have it very regularly iv always been told to do it every time they have there mxyi thou
