  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Favourite side of mouth

Mazzawa

Young Bun
Ok bit of an odd one here but here we go!

Our bun is in the vets again today, initially just for a check-up on his teeth but is now as I type being put under and having one set rasped down again as they have started to spur again (catching it early). Now, the vet says that his right side is perfect, well worn down, exactly as it should be (hurrah!!!) but it's his left side that's all spurred again. He definitely has a favourite side for chewing but I do not know if this is a) just a preference or b) discomfort after his first rasping caused him to eat on one side rather than the other. Does anyone else have buns with this? How can I get him to eat on both sides of his mouth without physically pushing willow or hay between the teeth on that side?!

We also need to encourage him to chew more to ensure his front teeth are kept at the right length - we have willow toys he sometimes nibbles but how do we make them more appealing? Does hay wear down bunny's front teeth at all as they seem to eat it to the side?

Why can't he be more rabbit like!!!

Back from vets - very drunk rabbit lying on the floor having a snooze!

Right, so the spurs were not bad at all, just catching them in the early days. However, one had caused a little bruising on his tongue (not a cut thank goodness) so is going back in 4 weeks for a check so we can monitor how fast they come back. Vet thinks that his impacted roots on the upper level may be a little painful hence why he chooses to chew on one side more than the other (he has been chewing on both according to the vet, just not the tough stuff on one side). Whether it is painful because it just is, or because of the spurs we do not know but will hopefully it work out soon by monitoring what side he eats hay and willow on.

We should still try to get him to eat on that side in case he is just nervous to eat there from previous pain before he got his teeth sorted - any tips on how to do this?!

(jack's-jane - apparently his bite is fine according to the vet and specialist he saw at the vet hospital, although how they check this in such a tiny mouth I am unsure - will keep it in mind though!)

has bun ever had an x ray to actually see whats going on in there???
Just a thought......

Yep full lot, had xrays when he had his teeth burred down at the vet hospital by the specialist (overgrown but hid it very very well from us until his eye watered). Xrays just showed an impaction by one molar on each side but only slightly into the tearduct - not the worst they've seen. Incisors also impacted a little worse but again not the worst, should've been caught in time we hope but just requires maintenance. There was nothing to say that he should be chewing mainly on one side - this seems to have only been the case for the last couple of weeks I've noticed so perhaps it's the spurs growing quickly.
