  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
hi, with being new to rabbits and they are still getting used to me, how should I go about trimming their nails? They used to be on concrete at my sisters house who didnt look after them and I did actually cut them when they were about 10 weeks old, but that was just once they are now 11 months old, so pretty much fully grown - if my partner helps me, how should we go about cutting them without them kicking the heck out of us and without hurting them.

Many thanks.

Natasha

I used to sit my buns between my legs while wrapped in a towel and then clip, just be careful you dont cut into the quick or the nail will bleed like hell.

if the nails are white you can see the vein, if they are dark you can use a torch to locate the vein. xx

I normally put them on the sofa and kinda curl round them. They are always happier if on their own four paws while I poke and prod.

Try really hard not to get the quick but if you do, flour is quite good at helping the blood flow to stop. I often have a small bowl of some on hand when I do nails just in case.
