Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Eye problems

Mama Doe
hey
I have a baby bunny (almost 8 weeks) who has some problems with his eye. He is completely blind in one (his "bad" eye) and partially blind in the other (his "good" eye).
His is at the moment on ticial antibiotics as whenever we take him off the antibiotics his eye's go all pussy again:sad2:
I have been talking to the vet recently and all they have said is they think it must be an actuall problem with his tear ducts and to wait till I get him neutered when the will have a look at them.
In the meantime tho I am to keep him on the antibiotics...im just worried that he will become resistant to them and loose all his sight (whenever he gets an infection he loses a bit more of his sight:sad2:).
Has anyone had any experiance with something like this?....How long have you had a rabbit stay on antibiotics?
Thanks

Bumping this up for you. Personally had no experience with eye problems, antibiotics are generally only given for a week or two at a time, but I think some buns are given them on a long-term basis. Hope someone comes along who knows a bit more X

I'm no expert on eye problems in rabbits, but Joe is suffering from an abscess behind his eye at the moment which has caused him to lose the sight in that eye :( and he's on once a week depocillin injections and a daily dose of oral baytril. He was getting discharge from the eye and had his tear ducts flushed a coule of times while he was still in the animal hospital.

However, he is also on an eye ointment called Fucilthelmic which is an antibiotic applied twice a day and once it's on the eye it turns into a liquid more like an eye drop so it's dead easy to use. Maybe something like that could help? Poor bunbuns, i would maybe look for another more rabbit knowledgable vet because leaving it until he's neutered and losing more and more sight in the meantime doesn't sound very helpful to me

ok. thanks guys for your reply's.:)
I think i am going to visit another vet and get a second opinion.
My vets are great, I just think that this problem is a bit more specialist.
Funny thing is that although his eyes are almost completely covered with a white film...he is still hell to catch:lol:
an his wee binkies are the cutest things:love:

Awh bless him :( Is he a fidgety bunny? Reason i ask is i have a foster bun with a poorly eye at the moment, and they flushed his tear duct which he was concious, in a normal consultation. He was on the ticial drops too, but has now changed to a cream type drop, cant rememebr the name, with baytril. I hope your bunnys eye improves soon xXx

no. he is a very floppy bun. is very good with his drops. Vet said he wouldnt want to do concious one:?
will talk to another vet about them
thanks:)
