Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Is this normal for a dental?

I have booked my bunny in to see the vet tomorrow morning and she will be going under GA to get her molars checked for spurs.

The girl on the phone told me that they normally keep rabbits in overnight after a GA because they are risky...is this normal?!! I am starting to panic now because I have never known them be kept in after a dental! Obviously I want what is best for her but I don't want her to stay in a scary place if she doesn't need to :? can't help but think she will be better off at home

It depends when Bun goes to surgery, maybe.
Perhaps too they are erring on the side of caution??
Mrs B and Lily were both discharged same day after GA...spey for one bun,Xray and dental for another.

Bungle was discharged 2 hours after having his first GA for his nose stitching and 4 hours after second time round. He was back to his normal self and eating within an hour!

Thanks for your replies :) I guess I will find out more in the morning - our appointment is at 9... I am quite happy for her to stay in if she isn't eating or back to her normal self but I am nervous about leaving her somewhere strange - it will be a sleepless night for me 2moro without her

my bun had 6 dentals and never stayed in over night.he had them done in the morning and was free to come home after 3.30.

None of ours have ever stayed in after a GA, but the vet has always warned me that it may be a possibility if they don't come round well or aren't eating/ pooping.

argh I am stressing now - I hope this doesn't mean that they have poor success rates with buns. I think I will take her in tomorrow and see what the vet says, if im not happy I won't let them do it and take her somewhere else

Did you say they are putting her under to LOOK for spurs?!

No vet can see the cheek side at the back of the mouth with the auroscope.
A GA is the only way anyone can say categorically whether there are spurs or not. It is normal practice to ask for consent to proceed to dental treatment if spurs are found under GA.

An overnight stay depends on when the surgery is done, how fast the bun eats afterwards & whether the bun has had past gut problems.
Initially Thumper stayed overnight because of previous stasis episodes & late afternoon surgery. He comes home about 3 hours after surgery now.

They normally come home the same day if all is OK i.e. they come round OK, eat and poop.

Homey had a GA on Tuesday for his dental. We dropped him off about 10.30 and we picked him up about 2.30. He was sleepy still so we brought him in the house for a couple of days and made sure he was nice and warm and he was eating and pooping OK.

Good luck tomorrow.

I'd pack a few treats as well as her usual food to encourage her to eat as soon as she can.Remember not to starve her beforehand.
ensure they will give her pain relief postoperatively and if she needs some when she comes home.
sending vibes for a quick recovery

Ok I have dropped her off this morning :( yes they are putting her under GA to look for spurs...the vet couldnt see any problems when she looked in her mouth while she was awake but they said if she has no spurs then they don't know what is wrong her her :( (she is off her food in a big way but her gut appears to still be functioning normally on the small amount she is eating)

They want to keep her in overnight because of the high risk of the GA :S im really very stressed because im sure the risk shouldn't be as high as they made out

Are they doing any other x-rays e.g. tummy to find out if it could be anything else. May be best to ask them now so they can check her out thoroughly.

Sending your little girlie lots of vibes.

If she comes round well, they may let you bring her home tonight.

my vet always keeps buns in overnight after a ga to make sure they're eating and pooping normally.

hope she's ok:)

Thanks for all your messages :) I have just rang the vets again for an update and they found some tiny spurs on her molars which have been filed down but the vet didn't seem to think they should be causing her any bother :?

She hasn't really eaten much yet but has done a few soft poops so I am more than happy for her to stay in overnight in the hospital with someone keeping an eye on her. I am keeping my fingers crossed she will have her appetite back by the morning otherwise I don't know what the next steps will be.

That's exactly the problem with my bun. We had no end of trouble feeding him, he wouldn't eat hay or drink water, & he had endless bowel issues. Eventually he had severe stasis & went to the exotic specialist. Even they didn't think the spurs were causing problems but burred them in desperation with his recurrent bowel issues. No bowel issues since.

I just have to be very aware of changes in drinking eating & poops which mean he needs another dental. They think he has a sensitive mouth, & eats less much earlier than some buns.

ETA please keep us updated with his progress.
