  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Cutaneous myxametosis

Lady is bringing her rabbit who has had Cutaneous myxametosis and had jaw abscess 18 months ago which was drained. Vet has advised not to vaccinate. Is this something allot of vets reccomend?

Did they recommend not to vaccinate because of the abcess? Is it clear now or is the bun still on treatment for it?

When Sorrel had her abcess and was on abx, a few people said they wouldn't advise vaccinating as it's not recommended when the bun is otherwise poorly...but as it was an ongoing and relatively low level problem the vet said to vaccinate anyway, as it was too much of a risk to leave her unvacc'd.

Is this lady's vet a different one to the one you use? If so could you maybe phone yorus for a second opinion?

Cutaneous relates to skin so same as abbymarysmokey I am thinking you mean nodular myxi.

I'm not sure about the vaccinating - I too would be wary of putting any more strain on an imuno compromised bun if the bun is still poorly.

If the bun had recovered from myxi previously I wonder wether they would now already have the sufficient antibodies to fight off the disease without need of a vaccination to produce them.

I think I would probably ask another vet for a second opinion or maybe the existing vet to explain their reasons in more detail so you know why they have said not to do it.

Flora has had nodular myxi but in line with my vet's recommendations, is still vaccinated every 6 months. She was fully recovered before being vaccinated though. Simon is a VERY bunny savvy vet and says that just because a bunny has had myxi once, doesn't mean they won't get it again.

Several of my bunnies have had nodular myxi this year, the vet reckons they will have their own immunity for the next 6 months and then to vaccinate them as normal.

Yes yes, this is what I believed to be the case

But I don't think a bun with a compromised immune system can be vaccs?

the lady uses a different vet to mine and I have no idea if her vets are any good as they are in a different area. Maybe I will take the bun to my vets to see what they advise. Thanks everyone.
