  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What is the best way to give Panacur liquid?

I use a 1ml syringe. The liquid is pretty tasteless (yep, I have ) and none of my Buns object. That way you know for sure that the full dose is ingested :)

What if the bun hates having food/meds syringed into their mouths? (Jose  ) Can you put it on their greens?

As per Jane's post, a 1ml syringe is probably best - just pop it straight into the mouth/side of cheek....... BUT mine steadfastly avoid me by about day 2 or 3 because they know what's coming . This shouldn't be a problem if your bunny lives in a hutch coz they're easy to catch but mine have a 25ft run with lots of hidey-holes and it's no fun spending half an hour chasing everyone round, not to mention stressful for the bunsters.

So I inject the panacur into mini-shredded wheats. I leave them to dry overnight (the buns don't like them soggy ) and I let them eat them the following morning. This is the only 'fail-safe' method I've ever discovered for my own personal situation.

Jose's been on Metacam, Zantac and Baytril for the last week and she hated having them syringed, she'd wriggle, scratch, bite and run away (she lives in her own room which is about 7ft by 8ft) so now we just squirt them on to her greens which she demolishes.

I'd prob have to go for the shredded wheat option too :)
