  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Just been castrated, advice please.

Barney rubble

Hi all, my rabbit Barney has just been castrated yesterday and wondered if anyone has any advice for aftercare for him as we didn't get much advice from vets, a bit of info on him; His name is Barney as I've already metioned, he's approx 16 weeks old, Netherland dwarf. He was given Baytril injection and Bimoyl, was only told one was antibiotic not sure what the other is.
Any advice would be greatly recieved thanx Helen x

He's not very happy with us! Not eating alot but drinking ok, weeing and pooing not as much but ok. He's quiet and not his lively self, but I guess thats to be expected.

Normally boys bounce back pretty quickly, to be honest, especially the younger ones. It sounds like maybe he needs some pain medication (after all, its GOT to hurt) at the very least.

Thank you, I think we'll get back in touch with the vets to see if we can get him some, It's def got to hurt, bless him don't want him to be in any pain.

The vets should be able to prescribe you something. If it is Metacam, that is also an anti-inflammatory so should help with any swelling.

If he stops eating or pooing or does anything else that concerns you (being cooler, lethargic, etc), then it becomes and emergency and your vet should be called tonight.
