  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I found a full intact rabbit claw in their cage about a week ago. At the time I checked them over, apart from Nutmeg who doesn't like me touching her claws much, and I didn't find anything so I thought maybe it was just some sort of outer covering. Anyway. I have just picked Mini up to clip her nails (they arn't that long but I like to do little and often) and it was one of hers, the nail is all exposed but surprisingly there isn't much blood.

I'm going to make an appointment for her on Monday if I can but is there anything I ought to do in the meantime?

You could bathe it with cooled boiled water twice a day to keep it clean as best as possible. There are more aggressive options for bathing if it looks infected (dilue iodine, betadine, hibiscrub, etc).

If it was mine I might also give some pain relief if she looked uncomfortable with that paw, but that's not a recommendation, merely what I might do.

Rabbits are very good at pulled claws off. Hopefully it will all regrow back fine with no problems. Good luck at the vets :)

I don't have any pain relief but she doesn't seem to be in any pain. She's bounding around as normal. She didn't even mind me touching it, normally they let me know if they are unhappy with something. I might try and give it a clean though.

Is it bleeding now?
If not just leave it alone as once you start rubbing the quick (vein) exposed bit you will make it bleed and it will be very sore. They tend to be fine and her nail will grow back nothing to worry about however
if she seems in any discomfort or its infected then vet is good idea.
Mine snapped his off it wasnt bleeding and he was fine but it depends how much of the quick is exposed
oh and if bleeding a little flour plain will do dab on end to clot it (its what grooming parlours use trust me)

No it's not bleeding now. Mischa snapped his claw once and I used flour on it to stop the bleeding but his snapped rather than the whole thing coming off. She certainly seems ok. She's due her myxo soon so I might just get them to check it over then.
