Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wise Old Thumper
someone on the guinea pig forum has taken in a rabbit her sister rescued and is no longer able to keep. the rabbit is 5years old and they do not know if she is spayed, but are keen to have her spayed if she hasn't been already.

has anyone got any advice on spaying a 5 year old bun, additional risks and whether vets could tell if she has been done already? would they know without having a look inside? you know what i mean.

i didn't want to give her advice without knowing what's best.

thanks. :)

Hi, I think I have read that you can sometimes tell by ultrasound scan if a bunny has been spayed. As to whether a 5 year old should be done I think that would just be up to the vet to do a thorough health check before a decision is made.

I had a doe spayed last year one month before her fifth birthday, I was worried about it but she was in good health and recovered very quickly.

I *think* they can shave her tummy to see if there are any scars there, but not certain.
