Dental bun...molar removal and prognosis help plz

Hi, not posted for a while.

Miffy my eldest bun of 2 1/2yrs has dental disease. She's had numerous dentals to burr down her molars since August 2007. In Feb 2008 she had 1 molar removed and recovered very well and didn't need another dental until Aug 2008 and managed until Jan 09 without needing any more dentals. Teeth were burred again on 2/1/09 and then again yesterday after we noticed increased teariness in her eye. Our lovely vets have informed us her roots are now growing backwards, they've removed another molar but i'm just wondering does anyone know what the prognosis for her is likely to be?

She won't eat hay and has gone into GI stasis in the past when we've slowly removed all other food options so we can't do that again.

I'm just wondering how many teeth can they remove? And is it gonna be in the near future that we have to decide to let her go

Does anyone have any advice or any expertise in this area??

Thanks xx

Why does your vet say the roots are growing backwards? Have skull x-rays been taken?

Are there any signs that her teeth need burring other than the runny eye?

The frequency between dentals doesn't seem too bad at the moment...monthly dentals are fairly common. You won't be able to have any molars removed unless they're already loose because of the risk of breaking the jawbone.

She won't eat hay and has gone into GI stasis in the past when we've slowly removed all other food options so we can't do that again.

You can't do that because the reason she won't eat the hay is because of the pain from the teeth.

Looking at the whole picture, it's a very common problem, there is no reason to let go your bun just because of simple dental problem.

In all the buns that I have in the past 10 years, their dental problem don't continue. In other words, once all the bad teeth are removed, and the bun go back to have her diet compose of 90% hay, then the teeth problem fixes itself.

You currently have a molar growing upwards towards the jaw, thus the tear in her eye. You have to get that tooth remove, there is no other way.

for the time being, this link can fix your bun's GI stasis problem:

My current bun Bernie had 3 bad teeth. All at the top, Once removed since last Jan. to Feb 2008, we only need to sand down the continuous grow teeth at the bottom (as there is no teeth at the top to offset the growing) once around Oct. 2008.

One of my buns teeth have grown through his jaw. We had skull x-rays to see the extent of the problem.

He has conscious dentals every 4 weeks and is very happy. He has had these for about 18 months now. He refuses to eat hay no matter what I try. It is a case of keeping the condition under control.

I hope to have Homer for some time yet.:D

Thanks for the replies.

Miffy's had skull xrays done twice in the last 12 months, the latest showing obvious backwards root growth, prior to that it showed changes in the jaw, lumps and bumps and it's not just 1 or 2 teeth it seems to be all of her molars. Prior to having her 1st tooth removed she was having dentals every 3-4 weeks, this is the 2nd tooth she's had removed (1 from each side now) so fingers crossed this will sort things out although after the 1st tooth removal she still didn't eat hay!!

Thankfully we've not had GI stasis since Jan 08

She has loads of symptoms when her teeth need doing, increased sneezing, food getting stuck in her mouth, dropping food, not eating the stalks of veg, drooling, very wet dewlap and not cleaning her bum, the weeping eye is a new symptom.

So what happens if every molar is growing the wrong way???? Does anyone have any experience of this?

it's nearly impossible. I have read cases that a rabbit requires a side of the teeth remove, but these are extremely rare cases.

My bun Bernie, because he was hopping around in downtown, he has no opportunity to eat hay. So when I pick him up at SPCA, he has teeth problem, 3 teeth need to be removed. All top teeth. Because of that, the bottom tooth is growing as there is no teeth at the top to offset his bottom tooth. As a result, I have to do 1 tooth trim. So, in summary:

3 teeth removal at the beginning in a batch around Feb 2008

1 tooth trim in Oct 2008

remember, once a set of teeth is in healthy shape, you don't need to do anything
