  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

An Injured Rabbit?

Yesterday, I came home, to find this little guy in my backyard. He seems to have some sort of injury on his nose/mouth, but I don't know what. He also has blood splatters inside his right ear. Any advice? It's too late to take him to a vet, so I'm wondering what I should do. He's behaving abnormally also. He's lethargic, and just sits there, huddled up, and shivering. He immediately came towards me when he saw me, instead of running away. We put a little bit of Neosporin on his wound, and we've tried giving him something to eat, but he's reluctant to eat or drink anything.

He doesn't particularly look like he has myxi so I would guess possibly hit by a car or attacked by a cat. It's odd he came towards you - freezing or running away would be a normal wild rabbit reaction.

Have you tried calling your normal vet? There is usually an emergency contact.

Has he eaten/drunk anything? I would put him in a darkish enclosed area eg a box or card with something over with food (hay/grass) and water. That way he can de stress. You could try syringing a little water in to him first though it's a balance of not stressing him out too much and making sure he's dehydrated. Despite how tempting it might be to peek then leave him alone.

Yeah, we're keeping him in a cardboard box with some food water. We're taking him to the vet first thing tomorrow, so I guess there's not much more we can do. Thanks.

awww poor little guy i would make sure thats not VHD bleeding from the nose is one sign. Hope all go's ok at the vets:wave:
