Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

White blood cell count is low?

A had a poorly bun last week which what I thought was GI stasis as he was doing all the normal issues, apart from he was acting strange by rolling around on his back. He had two issues like this last week. On the second Vet trip blood was taken and the Vet said his glucose was high, so he sent the bloods off.
They came back to today and the white blood cells are low.
He has to get some anti-biotics, then have another test next week. Any ideas what may be an issue here? The vet says if it isn't an infection may have to go down the bone marrow route which is obviously worrying.
I have read that the white cells can change throughout the day or by stress etc which I will mention to the vet when I take him in, so was just wondering if anyone else has anything similar.
He seems ok today, eating pooing weeing etc and seems himself. Obviously I am very stressed though!

A raised glucose level can be a *normal* finding in a blood test taken from a concious Bun. Stress makes the glucose level shoot through the roof

Stress can also lower the WCC as can a bacterial infection or Dental Disease
The WBCC is highest in the late afternoon/evening and it also peaks at three months and one year of age

I think I would assume a Bacterial/Viral infection of some sort and try not to worry about more 'sinister' problems at the moment. I'd also want the Vet to carry out a thorough Dental examination.

Thanks Jane. He has just (last week) had his teeth cut (the same day bloods were taken) as they were too pointy so would he have noticed an infection whilst he was at it do you think?
Also the blood was taken in the morning I think, well I took him in around 10.30 and picked him up that evening so I presume it was done first but not sure. Age - He is one next month.
