Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

re-opened wound!

only had 2 days to go before Dusty's staples were to be removed but she has beat us to it...........had to rush her to vet tonight as she had then opened up the wound again..it has been stapled again and then she has to go back tomorrow morning to get the wound cleaned and resutured. she also got some antibioitcs tonight too. she's fine otherwise eating and pooing.
anyone any advice please? have a collar for her but was trying not to use it....
thanks!

forgot to say this is now the 4th time since her spay over a week ago that she has removed stitches, then glue and now the staples.........

what a little monkey!

No advice I'm afraid as none of my girls ever bothered with their stiches.

Hope she doesn't pull this lot out!

Use the collar but remember to help her with her ceacal pellets, place tham (and her food) into a shallow dish or on a plate so she can get at them easily.

Keep an eye on her and make sure her collar does'nt become misplaced or that she gets a leg trapped inside it.

I had a rabbit who when he was castrated did exactly the same thing we ended up using the collar as it was the only way. He had removed the staples before I had gotten him into the car from the vets.
this is a pic of Dobbs after one of his vets visits

thanks for all your replies! got back from the vet earlier this evening - they decided to leave in the staples that they put in last night but have given me antibiotics to give her. she's to go back to vet on friday.. have not put the collar on her yet-am keeping an eye out for her going near the wound. vet said even with a collar on a rabbit can use a leg to scratch at the wound......
oh and she's in a huff once more because she was at the vet again...........

only one staple today been tampered with but have vet first thing in the morning for a check up...............and the wee madam knows she is doing wrong........:) still have not put the collar on her as worried this will give her more stress and draw more attention to that area......will see what vet says tomorrow..........

update............vet visit yesterday went well, all happy with progress...then this morning after she had eaten her breakfast she removed 2 of the staples again.........
back to the vet, they say the wound is healing and put in another staple........got home.......bought a baby vest at asda and tried to put that round her tummy and the collar on but didn't last plus she was getting stressed..........
anyone got any other ideas......it's almost 2 weeks now since her op...........

could they not use glue? if there is nothing that can be picked at eg stitches..maybe she won't be so inclined to try?

thanks but we tried the glue.....lasted a few hours more than the stitches.....the staples seem to stay in the longest before she starts pulling them out.........
i've had 4 other rabbits neutered in the past and didn't have the same problem.....
only bonus is that i'm off this weekend so i have more time to watch her........
